addy had woken up in the morning to the sound of hushed words being spoken between his mom and dad. it was hard to have a conversation in the small apartment without being able to hear most of a conversation through the thin walls. but groggy and excited, the redhead could only figure that it had to be about big plans for later in the day. he hopped out of bed, not waiting for the conversation to quiet done before he opened his bedroom door. the conversation had abruptly ended as he stepped out, replaced by silence, and then-
“...hey, there’s the birthday boy!”
he didn’t have long to react before he was suddenly swept off his feet, scooped into his dad’s big arms. the redhead automatically wrapped his small arms around the bigger man’s shoulders, grasping on tightly with a delighted laugh. “got damn you’re getting so big. someday you’ll be even bigger than me, won’t ya?” that was enough to earn an enthusiastic, “yeah!” from the small boy. he was slowly placed back onto the ground, letting his dad go so he could scamper into the small kitchen area to see his mom. the apartment smelled delicious, and he couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen his mom cooking pancakes of all things. chocolate chip pancakes; his favorite. “there’s my little man. thought we could have your favorite, today.” with that she’d handed him a plate full of the breakfast food, flashing a smile his way. and so far, this had to be the best birthday yet.
he wandered over to sit there at the small dining table, covering his pancakes in an insane amount of syrup. usually breakfast wasn’t something just- whipped up. it came in cheap sugary cereals or granola bars. today.. today he definitely felt spoiled. it hadn’t taken too long for his dad to come walking into the room, just getting off the phone. he stole a pancake from an unclaimed plate before saying around a mouthful of food, ”that was the bakery. i’m gonna get going, swing by there real quick. then we can have ourselves a little party, right, ad?”
and, whoa, that had the little boy’s mind absolutely blown. for every birthday he could remember, he hadn’t gotten a cake from a bakery. usually his mom would try and whip something up with what few ingredients they had and they called it good. that was enough for him to grin around a mouthful of pancakes, watching as his dad walked closer to him. he gently ruffled his hair. “i’ll see you around, kiddo.” and that was the last words he’d hear from his dad as he slipped out the door.

the past couple hours had been spent lounging on the couch, watching tv, the same routine as usual. he rested his chin in the palm of his hand, leaning against the arm of the couch. although, rather suddenly, it had been disrupted by his mother’s voice slowly raising from her and dad’s room, voice slightly muffled by the thin walls. his gaze wandered towards the room slowly, listening curiously.
“what the hell, jim?! you can’t just--” muffled words. “you have a family here, don’t you dare-” the direction of the conversation definitely was enough for addy to get worried. slowly he stood up from his spot on the couch, waiting for a moment as his mom began screaming. it was enough for him to flinch, anxiously wring his hands together. he didn’t try and go see her until the phone call had seemed to end, as everything seemed to go quiet again. part of him considered going back to watching his t.v show and acting like nothing had ever happened. they could keep having a perfect birthday, have a party later like nothing had ever happened.
but addy’s worry got the best of him. he crept slowly to the door, gently opening it and peeking through the crack. his mom was on the bed, shoulders shaking. hand clutching a phone tightly in her grasp. “mom? are you okay?” a long, drawn out pause. “yeah, sweetie. i’m fine. i’m just-” her voice was shaking. he opened the door a little bit more, watching with wide, worried eyes. another pause, and then his mom was slowly sitting up. and though the room was completely dark, the light filtered in from the doorway was enough to show her tear-stained face. but she’d said she was fine. it made him confused, and it was enough to make his own lip wobble. “what’s wrong?”
a sad smile came to her lips as she scooted towards the edge of the bed, holding her arms out. “c’mere.” scared, frightened, he immediately stepped closer, wandering into her embrace. her being so sad was so unlike her, and it scared him. made him so confused that he wanted to cry, himself. it wasn’t long in that embrace before he could feel her t-shirt wet with his own tears. it seemed like his mom had noticed that, too, as she gently rubbed his back. “you know mama loves you, right?” a sniffle and a nod. “and your daddy?” another nod. and addy didn’t know how long they had stayed there like it, but it had been long enough for his tears to dry- just not long enough for him to know what all was going on.
but it looked like his mom was going to explain. she had stood up and had decided to take his hand, pull him gently over towards the small dining room table with her. the next few moments had been a blur as she had opened her mouth, as she had explained carefully, fighting back tears, that his dad wouldn’t be coming back home. that it would be just the two of them from here on out… it was too much for the kid to handle. he could feel the tears welling in his eyes in disbelief, shaking his head and begging his mom that that wasn’t true. he would be back. he wasn’t gone. all he’d gotten was his mother to gently shush him, wiping his tears away gently. “don’t cry, addy. you need to be strong for the both of us, okay? you’re such a strong boy-” and as she gently wiped away his tears, she tried to utter other things that he supposed were supposed to comfort him. “we have each other, that’s all we need- we’ll be okay- things will get better..” all of them made him feel painfully numb. and he was too young. too young to feel this kind of pain and heartbreak.
eventually, his mother had left him on his own to try and process the information. and as the young boy sat at the dining room table, tears gently spilling down his cheeks, he learned a few things. one of them bitterly being that birthdays were the worst. another that he had to be strong. grow up. and, lastly, that he would never let someone get so close to his heart again, because love- it only hurts, in the end.
