The Calculator and the Computer
There is a tall building, full of many square offices. Each office has a similar layout, with one desk, several chairs, a computer and a few other useful objects. They all had a window, looking out over the somewhat gloomy downtown area. Each office was the workspace of some middle class worker, and home to a plethora of technology. In one particular office, there was only a computer and a calculator. The kind woman who worked in the room loved each of them, as they helped her each day with her job. Together they sat side by side on a dark wooden desk, the only obstructions to the beautiful mahogany surface. Occasionally a pencil or pen found its way to the surface, but it was soon removed, stuck clumsily into a drawer.
Each night when the woman would take her leave, the calculator and the computer would have wonderful conversations about such silly topics, though the topic did not seem to matter. They would laugh heartily at one another, smiling and blushing intensely. All night they would converse, and when morning came they would secretly dream of the time they would share that evening.
They each had a secret: they were madly in love with one another, though neither of them knew how the other felt. However, their love was forbidden. They were, of course, not the same. They weren’t made to be together, and thus their love towards each other must remain just a vision for a future that could not become a reality. And so every night they would laugh and smile, though only as the most sacred of friends.
It happened one night that the calculator could not hide his love any longer. He had to tell his companion about his true feelings. If she didn’t feel the same at least he would know it was truly never meant to be. “I need to tell you something, dearest friend of mine.†He spoke in his calm and raspy tones that drove the computer wild.
“And what might that be, friend?†She felt the heat in her complex systems, her screen reddening slightly.
“I don’t know how to put it…†The calculator thought for a few moments, finally deciding on what to say. “You are what keeps my simple mechanics working. If I didn’t have you, I do not think I could exist. You are my life. I love you, Computer.†The computer did not know how to react. All this time she had felt the same, only dreaming that the calculator had feelings for her.
She smiled, and whispered, “I love you too.†All though she hadn’t said much, her words had an impact on the calculator. He had been confirmed the one thing he had lived for for so long. The two laughed and smiled and continued to tell each other everything they loved about the other, neither pausing for even a second.

As it were, their love did not seem to be fate. For the next morning, the woman who worked in the office that looked just like all the others was quite disgruntled. She had been denied the raise that she most definitely needed. The entire day she pounded keys and cried silently to herself. Needing some fresh air, she opened a window. The cool autumn breeze calmed her down, in fact so much that she fell asleep in her chair.
When finally she awoke, she was quite frazzled and hurried out of the room and down the hall In her haste, she had neglected to close the window. A dismal rain dripped from the heavens, and down into the office with the mahogany desk and the two lovers. The rain drizzled through the window and onto the computers power source. In a flash her screen went dark, the last image her terrified face.
The calculator was devastated. He had finally found a purpose to his existence, and it had disappeared right before his eyes. A deep sadness overcame him and he just stared at her lifeless frame the entire night, and when morning came and and woman returned he watched as his love was taken away.
For the next several days the calculator worked as usual for the woman who worked in the office, though at night he was silent, remembering the intimate moments he had shared with the computer. The feelings he had once felt dissipated and in their wake a darkness appeared. The desk seemed so empty without her presence, he could barely stand to look at the dark wood.

In a building not too far away from the one with the offices all alike, the woman was looking for a new computer. There were so many to choose from; however a laptop seemed to be the best choice. She left the store, the laptop in her arms, and headed towards her office building.
The woman placed the laptop on the mahogany surface of her desk, though that was all she had time to do before her boss called her into a separate room. After she closed the door the calculator decided to look at the new laptop. It was quite different than his computer comrade, much slimmer and a different shape. Her keyboard and mouse were attached to her screen.
The calculator was unsure if he would ever feel comfortable with the new laptop. It was strange, knowing that the woman could replace the computer so easily and not even feel the slightest remorse. As the woman reentered the room she turned on the laptop and inserted a flash drive into the side. The screen flashed on and the woman sat down, using the rest of the day to install new software and download various updates.
When she finally left, the calculator looked at the laptop. Trying to be nice, he welcomed her to the office. “Hello there, Miss Laptop. I hope you enjoy your time in the office. Its not too much, but-â€ÂÂ
“Don’t you recognize me?†She cut him off. “I didn’t think you would forget me that quickly…â€ÂÂ
“Im sorry… but we just met. You were just brought here today. “ He stared at her in confusion.
“You really don’t remember all those conversations we would have at night? Or maybe you just don’t recognise me… I do look a little different…†She sighed.
“It can’t be possible… Are you really…?†The Calculator couldn’t finish his sentences, but the laptop understood well enough.
“Yes, silly! I might not be a computer anymore, but I will always be me. All of my memories and personality, everything is on that flashdrive. As long as it exists, so will I. And we can be together forever.†She smiled at him for the first time in a long time. The calculator smiled back, relieved that no matter what happened to her, the computer could always exist as herself.
The two talked all night every night for the rest of their days. They lasted long on each other’s happiness and love, and when the time came for them to depart the earth, they did together.
