Their focus shifted away from Lucerne and his papers over to Addy, a small smirk gracing their features for the briefest of seconds. Amusing comments, good questions, all with that signature Addy flair that they surprisingly sort of liked - even though it was often turned on them. But then their blue eyes returned to Lucerne once more, not losing the amusement in them even as the man snapped at them to shut up.

Oh, a challenge to their intelligence? The smirk didn't leave, but they didn't respond immediately, trying to determine just the right response before finally settling on something. "Nemo mortalium omnibus horis sapit." Did anyone here know that they spoke Latin? They didn't think so, certainly not of those present. Gavril might, but they seldom saw fit to reveal their knowledge of what was largely considered a dead language. Especially in this day and age. It was an especially obscure knowledge to have, and maybe it could be bizarre for one as young as them to know.

What could they say? Derick had wanted his godling to speak in ancient tongues.

Then he was calling them stupid again, and this actually drew a short laugh from Catalyst's lips. "Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt." Okay, now that the proverbial cat was out of the bag, they couldn't help but show off a little. They had to bask in this revelation as much as they could, since they doubted anyone else would be able to appreciate the comebacks themselves.

Cat rolled their eyes and finally switched back to English. "Translation? He's doing this for his ego." Discovery, or rediscovery in this case, not for the good of the world, but for the one that would get the credit. What a hero. "But okay, I won't point out that the electrical grid has degraded to the point that you'll have to probably replace it all, or point out that you'll need a hell of a lot of help to gather the resources to make any meaningful progress. You work alone, other people's feedback is just noise. I get it." And with that, they did what Lucerne probably wished they had done five minutes sooner, and shut their goddamn mouth.

Translations:
“Nemo mortalium omnibus horis sapit.” - “Of mortal men, none is wise at all times.”
“Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt.” - “Men generally believe what they want to.”

— His pen was running out of ink.

Lucerne had been writing. Sure, clear sheets of paper were hard to come by but, for the ones he did find, to him it was well worth his eloquent scribbles being written all across them. After all, he was writing notes. He was beginning his big project. He knew that he'd have to start somewhere, despite actually not being too knowledgeable on the area of expertise that he wished to dabble in. Lucerne had been a child prodigy, a genius even to this day, but it was merely a stereotype to assume that he knew everything about every subject. If he was honest, electricity was not his strong suit.

But he'd learn quick.

After all, he was going to be the man to solve the electricity crisis.

Of course, it was a long shot; the likelihood of him ever figuring this one out was minimal, but he was an ambitious man. He was ambitious, and he knew that he was intelligent enough to figure out this riddle and, most importantly, Lucerne felt like this was his reason for existence. His work ethic was what kept his mind from rotting; he loved a good riddle. Plus, his entire life, he could only hope for a sign that he was actually good for something. The world hadn't been to generous in giving him the signs - if anything, life only made him feel more useless as time passed. But, only now had he realized that the world had kept a part of his soul open as a gaping void on purpose. He wasn't a jack of all trades. He couldn't hold up much of a fight, nor was he very agile. He had an evident lack of social skills, and he could barely hold a weapon.

He was nobody's hero and he had always assumed that this'd be the case. But, what if that was false? What if he could be more than just someone's hero? What if he could be everyone's hero? He could solve the crisis, be the man to pull society back up onto its feet. He'd be a name in everybody's history books - Wilhelm Lucerne Nouvel, the world's hero.

But again, it was a long shot. But he had to begin somewhere.

And so, Lucerne was in the casino. It was quieter than usual which Lucerne was grateful for. He was fantastic at droning sound out - people out - when he was in the zone, and the casino was probably the most useful place to be if he were to get any work done. Books lay across the table, pages open to relevant pages, whilst he scribbled down on the pages. This was only the beginning.

[ okay so yeah. lucerne has convinced himself that he can solve the whole electricity crisis because he is trying to prove to himself that he's not a useless member of society so. yes.]

Mike had been playing a friendly game of pool with an NPC, while he'd lost (scratch on the damn eight), he wasn't invested in winning, he was just taking a break from working his ass off. It was nice to take a breather, a minute to think, reflect. He did a hell of a lot of work around here, a lot of it was for his own purposes, but he did try to help out the people in the Badlands as well.

The dark haired soldier leaned back his eyes roving around the casino, there he saw Lucerne pouring over a ton of books, eh, he liked books, and he liked getting to know people (even if he found out he didn't actually like those people). Luce was a friend of Addy's possibly the only friend that Red had. But Mike was mildly fond of the young man, saw him as someone who had talent and potential, and Mike was always happy to help people live up to and fulfill their potential.

He stuck his hands into the pockets of his jeans and walked over, head tilted to the side as he read over the quiet man's shoulder, interesting books, interesting topics. Mike wasn't a scientist or an electrician. But he understood something about power, after all, he'd once rigged an explosive using a cellphone battery and a few other things. He wasn't MacGyver though, he didn't know everything, nor did he pretend to know everything.

He furrowed his brows for a few moments mouthing the words on one of the pages before interrupting the hard work which Lucerne was most likely doing. Guy probably wanted, well needed silence to think, but Mike was curious, and also a bit of an asshole."What're you up to Milkman?" The soldier asked cheerfully.

— the casino had slowly but surely become addy’s favorite place to be. whether it be billiards or merely drinking at the bar, he felt like he’d finally found a place where he could blend in rather easily. nobody even really sent him a glance, nowadays, and it was a good change. it still took some getting used to, going from the misfit to being someone who, somehow, oddly fit in.

swiveling his gaze around the casino, his gaze couldn’t help but land on someone who definitely didn’t fit in at a casino. books, and piles of them. page upon page laid sprawled out. if he’d just been given that messy table to go by, he would’ve easily been able to tell who was the cause of it all. lucerne. he watched him for a couple of moments as the man scribbled on the pages, obviously focused on something he found important. which, since it was lucerne, meant it was probably nothing important at all.

must be playing hero again, he considered. he’d heard the man over the years - and years - of being with him rambling on about how there was a world that needed to be saved! the man acted as if it was actually possible to save this world. it was honestly ridiculous, and sometimes addy got so close to telling the man there was no way he’d be able to save this shithole.

but, also, a part of him also sort of wanted to egg the man on.

god, fuck feelings.

despite his antagonistic views on the whole save-the-world gimmick, that didn’t stop him from sliding out of his seat at the bar, alcohol in hand as he walked closer. mike had seemed to beat him to the punch, standing there and mouthing the words to one of the pages before asking lucerne what he was up to - milkman being a nice touch.

wordlessly, he swept one of lucerne’s scribbles off the table, trying to read and decipher just what the fuck was written on them. it was hard to piece together what exactly was chicken-scratched all over, mainly because lucerne was a genius and also because addy wasn’t as well-versed in reading cursive. however, he was able to get a general feel about what the man was talking about. “since when did you become an electrician? thought you were a doctor, or some shit.”

— Whilst Lucerne was in the zone, he was nearly unable to take notice of a voice behind him entirely. After all, once his mind was set on one thing, it was terribly difficult to break his concentration away from that task at hand. And, if Lucerne was totally honest, it turned out that he was really enjoying physics and the concept of electricity. With his interest piqued, it would be difficult to tear him away from the books sprawled messily across the table. "What're you up to Milkman?" Words droned in the back of his mind, in that moment too set on the words he was reading to even acknowledge that somebody had actually spoken those words to him. His subconscious wordlessly answered the question given to him, mind briefly examining what he'd been writing before snapping back into reality several long seconds later.

Head quickly twisted to the side to finally take notice of Mike after what must've been a few long and awkward moments for the other man. Oh. It was him who'd spoken. His cold gaze was unable to look Mike in the eyes as he instead stared off to the side almost dumbfounded, then quickly clearing his throat and shifting in his seat. He was so overwhelming awkward, it was humiliating. And, oftentimes, it tended to come across as if Lucerne didn't like socializing, which was entirely false; he just didn't know how to. "Solving the World's crisis." He answered lowly, monotonously, words dripping with confidence as he placed the pen he still had gripped in his hand onto the table. Eyes searched his writing, difficult to read in the way he wrote before adding, "If nobody else would like to figure it out, then I believe that it's my job to do so." He explained carefully, drumming his fingers anxiously on the table in thought.

He blinked as a hand reached out to take one of his sheets, gaze following to find that it was Addy who'd taken it. By the look on his face alone, Lucerne could tell that Addy was having trouble reading what the words said. But, if Lucerne could read what he'd written, that was all that mattered to him. Lucerne turned his head once more to stare at the table, back facing the two men as he listened to what Addy had to say. "I don't expect you to understand what I've written. Either of you, for a matter of fact." He was very quick to quip back snidely, an antisocial smile slowly growing on his lips, "But, if you must know, I have taken on a new project. One to save the world."

He certainly seemed like a smart man, but could he really save the world, as he so claimed?

He wandered over, refraining from butting into the conversation though curiously listening in to what the others talked about. "Really?" He blinked. His blue gaze, after having lingered his sights on the books and papers for a few moments, looked up now at the older man. "How are you gonna do that?" His tone was void of anything remotely condescending or sarcastic; he was simply just curious as to what Lucerne's thought process was. Gabriel had never really pondered about the solution to the electricity crisis before; he had been born into the apocalypse and had always just accepted the lack of resources as normal. It was hard, it was tough, it was brutal, but it was just life. That was what his father had always told him, anyways.

When they were born, the lights went out. When they cried, they came back on. That sounded edgy and fake, but it was true. They just so happened to be born not only in the area first affected by the blackout, but as it began. They'd never not known a world untouched by the apocalypse, and the idea of anything else was ridiculous.

That wasn't to speak of how for a few years they'd been made out to be some sort of god whose birth signaled the end. That was even more ridiculous in their eyes than one man thinking he was going to reverse the virus. The world of old was far too complicated to be solved by one man, too many things had gone into it that required a range of different skill sets. But hey, theoretically anything could be possible, right? At least that didn't involve supernatural bullshit.

Still, Cat can't help but snort a laugh when Lucerne proclaims that he's going to save the world. "And which crisis is that, Doc? Gonna bring vaccines back, or re-industrialize the world to produce enough food for the population? No, Addy said you're playing at being an electrician..." They rolled their eyes and took a sip of the mysterious drink in their hand. "I never took you for an optimist, Lucerne."

— more people were coming by, and even then addy couldn’t try and play nice. narrowing his eyes slightly, brows furrowing, at the man’s remark, he scoffed. “i don’t ‘expect you to understand’ what you’ve written, either- after i throw this in the fucking ocean.” if it had been anyone else, they probably would’ve taken his remark seriously. however, when it came to lucerne, the man knew his odd mannerisms way too much to even think that the redhead would actually walk out there and throw these documents in the ocean …. even though he had almost briefly considered it.

when cat remarked the he didn’t take lucerne as an optimist, addy couldn’t keep himself from butting in. “because he isn’t,” he stated matter of factly, waiting a moment before placing the papers back down onto the man’s work space. “bastard always goes on this rant. this ‘save the world’ shit." at least as long as the redhead could remember it had been the way. the man didn’t have time to sit down, he didn’t have time to be a bore; he had a world to save! and all that bullshit he’d heard a few too many times. the talk of saving the world had died down a while ago, though.. addy was fuckin’ surprised to see this hero complex making a comeback so soon. “can i just ask why? nobody else cares about this electricity bullshit.”

the idea then struck him, and he simply waited a moment before asking, “so what are you doing this for? what’s your motive?” after everything addy had been through in life, he found it hard to believe that someone would do something relatively nice for no real benefit. given, lucerne would have electricity, which was a definite plus, but addy felt like there had to be something more. besides, the man trying to play hero seemingly didn’t have a heart on most occasions; there was no way he could be doing this just to be nice, right? “you don’t seem like an optimist, but you definitely don’t seem like the fuckin’ type to enjoy people kissing your feet for some good deed.”

— At first, conversation had been pleasant enough, Gabriel wandering over to begin a conversation with him and, quite frankly, boosting Lucerne's turbulent ego. He picked up the pen once again, choosing not to acknowledge Gabe at all for a moment, piercing blue eyes wandering across words in a book half-heartedly before very subtly bobbing his head as affirmation. "Well-" He began, pointing the pen towards his findings, "If human kind could discover electricity with nothing else but their imagination guiding them, then I can do so too with information provided. Is quite a tedious process as, after all, it did take around two thousand six hundred years for human kind to discover it the first time around, and that was before they even knew that electricity even existed, so I predict that I could rediscover it in several years... Months, perhaps."

His words were arrogant, self-assured, and it was clear to see that even Lucerne saw himself as some type of genius. Yet, he couldn't help but believe this fact oh-so confidently - it was the only single strength of his. And, besides, Lucerne was old enough and fortunately grew up in an affluent enough family to have the luxury of experiencing electricity for quite some time before the last few generators were eventually destroyed. "Anything broken can be fixed." He finally mused, mainly to himself, as he finally raised his head to look at Gabriel.

If only he could fix the electric grid once more, and then this information could be passed around globally to solve the entire world's crisis. In the meantime, a smaller scale grid could be created. Microgrids with battery storage installed to restore small-scale electric grid function, powering several hundred buildings at a time. This could power hospitals, community centers, items such as refrigerators and heaters, water pumps - civilization could return back to its original, pre-apocalyptic state. Barbarians would not have control of the lands anymore, for society would rebuild itself.

Oh, and speaking of which, that was when Catalyst wandered over with nothing good to say.

Lucerne inhaled a deep breath, tensing up as Cat snorted with laughter. Eyes were quick to avert once more, staring at the pages of writing sprawled across the table. Words so mocking passed their lips, and honestly for a split second Lucerne contemplated Cat's question. Was this a crisis? Honestly, Lucerne would say so. After all he'd seen with his own eyes over the years, life hadn't always been so cutthroat and merciless. And so, yes, Lucerne would consider it a crisis. He was quiet, however, shoulders slumping at their words. "Addy said you're playing at being an electrician." Lucerne's head twitched very subtly to the left where Cat stood, still unable to confront their face.

Their final words were what really began to get to Lucerne. He never had been an optimist. He was only a man who wanted to prove himself, make people proud, give his life a purpose. Just instead, all he felt were people shutting the notion down all around him. And then, Addy joined in. Fingertips drummed on his thigh in thought, narrowed eyes staring down at the table, back facing away from the others stood around him. "Bastard always goes on this rant." Addy began. "Oh, shut up." Lucerne exclaimed theatrically, finally straightening his back so that he could twist around to stare intently towards the group, eyes piercing particularly into Cat's gaze.

"Keep on talking;" He began snidely, face evidently unimpressed as he watched Cat intently. "Someday you'll say something intelligent... But, something tells me that that's just my optimism speaking." He spat venomously, words sarcastic and rude, before turning his head to stare at Addy. "And as for you -" He began before pausing, lips parting and brows furrowing together before huffing a breath of laughter in disbelief. "Oh, look at you lot." He commented after several seconds in a silent contemplation. Eyes went from Addy to Mike, Mike to Gabe (sorry Gabe, but Lucerne would drag him into this as carelessly as ever), Gabe to Cat, and then back to Addy. "I wonder what it must be like in your funny little brains. It must be so frustrating to be so stupid." Head shook slowly from side to side before he returned his eyes to the table, chuckling to himself in incredulity. "So, so stupid." He uttered softly, mainly to himself, as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

Addy then asked Lucerne why he cared so much about this. Why he was so interested in solving the crisis. Lucerne's lips curled into a sarcastic smile at Addy's words, a smile which was so vile and demeaning. "Who said that I was doing this for anybody else?" He finally answered curtly, lying through his teeth so well. After all, he wouldn't give Addy the detailed answer he was looking for; only lies had detail. And, finally, he turned back to reveal his wicked smile towards Addy, it instantly falling off his lips as his gaze landed on the redhead - only proving that it was as fake as anything - before uttering nastily, "And if I was, I most certainly would not be doing it for you. Nor you." Eyes turned to Cat again. "So do us all a favor and stop inflicting your opinions on the world."

Well that was one way to fight fire with fire.

— addy liked to think that he knew more about lucerne than the average person. then again, he also liked to think that wasn’t saying very much. the more he sat around with the guy, the more he felt like he knew him, the more the redhead began to doubt his own judgement. he’d thought lucerne was his friend - now he was starting to doubt it. he’d thought lucerne loved him - now he didn’t even think he had been thinking straight in that moment. lucerne was hard to read, even harder to try and understand. sometimes the redhead wondered why he even tried to, anymore. there were just these - moments, that made the attempts feel worth it.

as much as everyone talked it up, love fucking sucked.

“and as for you -”
seeing lucerne turn his head towards him, after a rather snide remark about catalyst’s intelligence, his face contorted into the best portrayal of “unimpressed” as it could get. he even managed to keep that look as lucerne made a dig about everybody’s stupidity, not just addy’s. it still hurt like the comment had been directed at him. and from anyone else, addy really didn’t care about being called stupid. being called ‘so, so stupid’ by lucerne.. it fucking hurt. “yeah? well it doesn’t look like your fuckin’ smarts have gotten you very far either,” he muttered, obviously pissed the fuck off. quieting, he then muttered, “you’re the one standing here, writing plans to bring back electricity, thinking you can save the world.” tell me what’s more stupid than that, he wanted to say, but he couldn’t bring himself to. not to lucerne.

addy’s care for lucerne seemed about as strong as lucerne’s damn obliviousness to-- everything. addy had been going through rough times lately - the only person he had wanted to see during this had been lucerne. nice to see how things changed once they joined a group, he supposed- it looked like the two didn’t constantly hang out, now that it was no longer just the two of them. that’s how it’d always be for addy, right? fucking-- care about someone, just for them to show how nasty they really fuckin’ were. lucerne not being there when addy needed him the most. any other person probably would've understood why the redhead had been so - different lately. but lucerne wasn't just any other person. as much as addy wanted him to.

"whatever. have fun with your stupid project." he thought it was only right to turn 'stupid' right back on his friend(?). calling someone with such a complex mind stupid felt unfitting, but it felt nice to say. show him he meant business. maybe when this project failed, the other man would be more willing to be less of a fucking asshole. if the project worked, and lucerne found electricity, maybe he could take one of the plugs and shove it up his-- "if you get the electricity working, get me a lava lamp or something." might as well try and stop being as much of an asshole as lucerne was. guess addy wouldn't be convinced lucerne had solved the 'crisis' until there was a lava lamp on his nightstand.
