☁  hayley was good at a lot of things. she could perform some lovely stitches, she could hold her liquor, she could do a pretty good handstand when she wasn't a thousand months pregnant. she wasn't even half bad with people, with animals, with painting. but the one thing hayley chase had never shown a knack for in her twenty-three years was carpentry.

twenty-three weeks pregnant, hayley sat on the floor in her bedroom, pieces of wood and various bolts scattered around her, the door propped open. she'd come across an old crib some time ago, and while it had taken a bit for her to find the tools necessary to put it together, she had and now came the... well, the putting together part. she stared at the instructions, not entirely understanding the mechanics of it, brows furrowed as she concentrated.

❝what... the fuck...❞ she mumbled, frustration clear in her voice as she tried to figure out what she had to do to make it go together.

"What are you building?" Shiloh asked excitedly. She loved constructing things, anything that involved getting her hands dirty she could get behind.

☁  hayley's gaze shifted up to find shiloh standing in the doorway, bright and happy as always, and immediately she felt sort of guilty for being in a sour mood while shiloh was out and about, being a little ray of sunshine. she wanted to blame the hormones, but truth be told, hayley just hated this activity. she wasn't good at everything, but for the first time in her life she was truly atrocious, and it was something necessary for her child.

❝attempting,❞ she said, followed by a sigh, ❝and failing to be a carpenter. i don't even know which one of these is a screwdriver.❞ she said, motioning to the pile of tools she'd gathered. it wasn't as though she'd been raised in a normal household with tools and building things, she'd grown up by herself in an apocalypse. things like screwdrivers really couldn't be expected to be common knowledge — though she made a note to learn all this stuff to teach her child one day.

"Let me help." She plopped down, excitement filling her gaze. She scanned over the tools, screws, and other materials Hayley had collected. "Ah! Here's the screwdriver." She exclaimed, handing the tool to the other female. She hadn't necessarily grown up with people who'd known about the subject, but her parents noticed her interest in building things from a very young age and tried their best to educate Shiloh. It wasn't easy, considering she, too, grew up in the apocalypse.

“ THE MOST TENDER PLACE IN MY HEART ”
evan — she,her — flintlock lodge — — [url=http://]tags
the most skills had evan had were mostly soft ones. social skills. negotiating disputes, taking care those those who couldn't take care of themselves. that kind of thing. however, she was pretty good at carpentry. she didn't think of it that way, though, she mostly figured that she knew how to fix things that needed fixed. she'd never really tried to build something, though.

"aw, jeez, that's complicated," she murmured, sticking her head into the doorway. "if you two want any more help just let me know, but i guess i'll just keep you company in the meantime."

☁  sure enough, shiloh hopped in, helpful as always. hayley smiled in thanks at the teenager, glancing up to evan and holding the smile for her, too. ❝company is always welcome.❞ she assured her, before glancing back down to the blueprints. ❝y'know, i was reading a book about this nesting phase. apparently it's normal that i want to get everything set up, i just kinda figured i'd have a few more weeks until all i wanted to do was clean and build and paint.❞ she mused, amusement present in her tone and features as she shuffled through the bolts.

She took in a deep inhale. This was right in her wheelhouse, something she'd been doing for almost her whole life. "Well, what are you building? What type of wood are you using? Can-can I see the blueprints?" She tried to shuffle in a bit closer to Hayley in order to see a bit clearer, squinting her emerald eyes in order to do so.

☁  hayley glanced up at shiloh's inquiry, offering the instructions for her to view as well, and nodding to the box in the corner, with the picture of the crib on it. ❝i'm not sure, all of it came pre-cut in the box, just has to be assembled.❞ she explained, other hand moving to pick up her glass of water and taking a sip. ❝just a regular ol' crib.❞ she added, chuckling a bit.

This was the highlight of her day. Her week, even. She'd been waiting for a new project to work on, and was worried about getting a bit rusty. However, this fixed everything. She immediately started trying to fit certain pieces together.

//sorry, low muse !!
