In order to keep their citizens inside the walls, they control emotions that hinder their people from ever even thinking about leaving. The Bishops can control fear in general, but they have individual ways of attacking fear. They're unable to take over and control the other Bishops. These Bishops are immortal, but their bodies wither and die, leaving them forced to find new vessels after a while. When they find new vessels, they (and the other Bishops) must train the newer vessel to control these new powers — to turn the vessels into warriors. Though these Bishops are equal in name (and name only), some are openly considered more important than others to keep their citizens in. These three reigning Bishops are the heart of Dema, the Middle Three - led by the Fourth Bishop, Nico.

When the Bishops choose vessels that they wish to train to be their successors, they capture them and keep them in place in the Towers of Silence. They individually train them, but they only train the vessel’s physical body using muscle memory and not their conscious thought, because their mind isn’t useful. This is due to the fact that a vessel’s soul is killed once the body is in use. The Bishop will appear as Death (a hooded figure on a white horse) to take the body, and the Bishop will then kill the soul and take the body. The soul is usually, at this point, impossible to bring back. The Bishop can also temporarily use a body, and based on how strong the Bishop is, this will be indicated by markings on the vessel’s body, which will vary based on person to person (such as black hands/neck, red eyes, etc).

— Andre — is the Bishop in charge of controlling apathy. Believed to be the oldest Bishop, and believes that they should lead the Bishops due to seniority.
— Lisden — is the Bishop in charge of controlling acceptance. They think any of the Bishops would make a good leader, Lisden isn't bothered by a main Bishop in charge. Known to be a perfectionist who's impossibly hard on themselves.
— Keons — is the Bishop in charge of controlling free thinking. Doesn't like the rebellion, prefers an equal playing ground for the Bishops.
— Nico is the Bishop in charge of controlling anxiety. Considered to be the strongest Bishop. One of the Middle Three.
— Reisdro is the Bishop in charge of controlling hope. Ambitious, constantly wanting to be in the spotlight, with the intent on overthrowing Nico. One of the Middle Three.
— Sacarver is the Bishop in charge of controlling love. Picks vessels that look the same as the last, intends on supporting Reisdro's coup. One of the Middle Three.
— Nills — is the Bishop in charge of controlling despair. The youngest Bishop of them all. Because of this, they're often ostracized and ignored.
— Vetomo — is the Bishop in charge of controlling rebellion. This Bishop is known for their chaotic, devil-may-care streak.
— Listo — is the Bishop in charge of controlling imagination. Known for being extremely diplomatic and wanting the Bishops to work together, without leaders. Against the concept of the Middle Three.

The Sacred Municipality of Dema is a walled city in which you can almost taste the fear dripping from everyone's bodies. The Nine Bishops guide and protect this city under the belief of Vialism: numbness to all emotion. This city looks like any other small city, except there's a distinct feeling of fear underlining everything you feel or do. They encourage one thing in Dema: don't ever leave. Not like you can - a trench surrounds the entire city, and nobody knows what it's even like outside, though it's rumored that even leaving the city is a feat of mental, physical, and spiritual strength.

The city itself is circular, with a massive central gathering point that holds the main square and the Towers of Silence. The main square has a carving of the original Nine Bishops within. It's considered good luck to not look them in their eyes. The Towers of Silence hold the Nine Bishops (and their vessels-in-training, on occasion), and is used as the city's graveyard. The dead Dema citizens are left on the rooftops of the Towers of Silence to decay, and get picked clean by the vultures that nest and live up there. The Towers of Silence are strictly off-limits to normal Dema citizens.

The Districts are the newest addition to the city, separating the buildings of the city into nine parts, each controlled by a Bishop. These districts house people with emotions that align with each of the Bishops: rebels are taken to Vetomo's district, those inspiring hope are taken to Reisdro, etc., etc. In the center of each of these districts is a statue of the Bishop that controls that particular area. A bunker is placed underneath each statue, where that Bishop's vessel is contained away from the district citizens.

The Glorious Vista is just outside the Districts, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the city, as well as the least fearful. Here, the Bishops perform their official ceremony bonding them to their vessel, destroying their soul and taking over their body. Only the Bishops have ever seen this place.

The Limit is the training grounds for the vessels. It's a natural arena, with plenty of places to hide, run, and fight. Here, they're put to their limit physically, training with the Bishops and often fighting against their own. Unfortunately, fatalities occur on this battlefield - to kill a citizen is sometimes necessary depending on the vessel.
