I THINK THEREFORE I AM / gray

[align=center][div style="width: 370px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 1.4; color: black;"]— Although Flintlock was no longer actively fighting a war, there was always a need to keep defenses high - just in case. The higher-ups knew this, of course - and it was exactly why Colt had been tasked with rebuilding some fortification at the border that had fallen over during a storm a few nights back. He really didn't mind the mundane daily chores that he was given; it was still much better here than it had been in the Ring. In Flintlock, at least he had some downtime to himself.

The mercenary threw on his heavy coat and headed out the door of the lodge with a sigh. He was supposed to be working with some guy named Gray; apparently, the dude had been a part of Flintlock a few years back, but had left and only recently returned. He didn't care all that much, as long as he did a half-decent job on the fortification. Colt made his way down the mountainside to the wall that had collapsed, looking it over with a slight wince. It was pretty messed up; they would essentially have to build it from scratch. He turned to look around for Gray, eager to get started so they could get it over with.

Mundane tasks were exactly as exciting as they sounded. They were going to rebuild some fortifications, try not to overdose on adrenaline! But there was something about the monotony that was soothing to Gray, no, not the monotony. The productivity. The monotony made it easy to take up the tasks and get them done, but the productivity and end result was what made it worth doing. Flintlock would be a little bit safer, and Gray could rest easy knowing he hadn't wasted his time. He wasn't too keen on that, if he could help it. He tried to always be doing something, and the less inside it was the better. Though, at night there wasn't much he could do that was productive other than reading.

He did a lot of reading, too.

Essentially, the young man couldn't stand being idle, and quite frankly no one wanted to see what an idle Gray with no task to do would do instead. Giving him free time just meant he had more opportunity to criticize others - and only he seemed to enjoy that.

It took all of fifteen seconds looking at the collapsed wall for Gray to determine that there was no point in trying to salvage the pitiful barrier. Strategically it was almost useless, and the ground was too steep and unstable to support it for long anyway. "Why did they put this - nevermind. I know a better spot."

At the sound of footfall, he looked up to see another kid around his age wander over. This was Gray, he assumed. He expected the other male to offer some sort of greeting, but he seemed to move right to the barrier, inspecting it carefully. When he did speak up, it was about moving the stupid wall.

Colt scoffed. "Gray, right? The name's Colt. Nice to meet you too, by the way," he called out as he walked over, his gruff voice dripping with sarcasm. He honestly wasn't too mad that Gray had chosen to get right down to business - he just liked being sarcastic. He stuck his hands in his pockets, furrowing his brow when he realized what Gray had suggested. He wanted to move the barrier? "Huh? Why would we move it?" he would question, frowning. "I mean - I get that it's probably not in the best spot, but all Eddie told me was that he wanted it rebuilt. He wants a barrier somewhere else, he'll tell us. I don't wanna move it and then get my ass reamed because it's not in the right spot." Frankly, he didn't care where the stupid barrier was - he just wanted to get this chore over with and to not have to do it again.

Though not one to directly admit his own arrogance without a layer of irony or sarcasm as a buffer, it was certainly there. Once upon a time he had been important, he had been known, it hadn't yet set in that he wasn't anymore. Not like he'd used to be. Which honestly wasn't something he was opposed to, but it did mean that he tended to skip the introductions. He was Grayson. He hunted. He annoyed people. It took about two minutes to figure those things out, aside from perhaps his name - again, he didn't always bother with the introductions.

In this instance it had seemed justified. He'd been given a name of a companion, so surely the other would as well? And look, he'd been right. Who needed to introduce himself personally when Eddie would do it for him? "Mm? Yeah, I know who you are." At Colt's obvious, "polite" way of calling him out for being rude, he merely offered the other boy some finger guns.

"We will rebuild it. Somewhere useful." It wasn't like Eddie had said rebuild it in that exact spot, right? Even if he did, Gray would still be just as quick to disregard it. "Come on, you'll get a verbal paddling and have to rebuild it at worst." Which Colt might get anyway, considering who Gray was as a person and the likelihood that it would collapse again.

As Gray continued to suggest - or rather demand - that they build the wall someplace else, Colt could feel a pang of annoyance in his chest. Not that he would ever explain it, or really think critically about it himself - but this desire to do as he was told and get menial tasks over with absolutely stemmed from the way that he was raised. In the Ring, if he stepped even a hair out of line, if he strayed even an inch from his original instructions, then he was hit, or forced to do something ten times worse - plain and simple. He was trained from birth to be a mindless soldier, and escaping that mentality was tough - even when he was far from that life now.

There was another factor in this situation, too - pure stubbornness. It irritated him immensely that Gray was so adamant about not listening to him. Why did it even matter anyway? What was the big deal? Obviously, Gray wasn't going to back down, so he wouldn't, either. He clenched his fists. "Uh-huh, so why don't we avoid that verbal paddling altogether and just build the stupid barrier where it's supposed to be?" He gestured to the damaged wall. "It's the obvious choice. Why's it matter anyways?"
