it had been a long time since roman had last gone to the district. too long. he felt like a stranger when he had first made his way towards the coastal town. almost a year ago, he made his way to the district with a healing bullet wound, seeking further help from the clinic. sticking around for a few days as he tried to clear his head. he’d even asked green be his best man at his wedding. it was hard to believe that all of that had been the start of a long war, with so much bloodshed and fear happening from then until recently. it was hard to believe that the best moment of his life - marrying frank - was soon accompanied with one of the most trying times for the both of them. they could do with a bit of a getaway from the prairie for a while. the coastal town and the sandy shore was a long-awaited, pleasant sight.

dragging frank to his second home was the right thing to do. they deserved this, after everything they’d been through in the past year. maybe it was naive to try and relax so soon after a war where no one was the clear victor - where both parties lost more than any victory could make up for - but roman desired to feel a sense of calm for the first time in so long. he was definitely making himself comfortable. he sat at the waterfront, fruity drink in hand, squinting against the sun to make out the people playing along the beach.

he had missed the district. surely he would try his best to make the most of this little “vacation” of sorts.

Two best friends, two brothers, joined at the hip. It was hard to see how anything could possibly come between the two of them; together they were bound in a way that not even death could separate. But abandonment? Sometimes that hurt worse than death. Knowing that you could be with them but, for some unavowed reason, they chose to part ways and leave you behind. Knowing that when Green stood in the side of the street, eyes following a vehicle rolling on by and disappearing around the corner as he said to Roman his final, wordless goodbyes, it was the mere reminder that family wasn’t forever. It never had been for Greenie.

But, one day, they’d crossed paths again. Collided once more, and this time, it felt as if Roman’s presence would remain a more permanent one for the foreseeable future. As Green spotted Roman sitting at the waterfront, drink in hand, Green visibly faltered for a minute before he pulled his head back. ❝ Ro? ❞ He called out with surprise, waiting until Roman looked his way before Green’s lips curled into a toothy grin. He trotted over, plopping down beside his best friend before slinging an arm around him in some attempt of a hug. ❝ When did you get to the District?! ❞ ❝ Just long enough to get these fancy looking drinks. ❞ Another familiar voice spoke behind him, Green looking over his shoulder to see Frank sitting down on the other side of Roman.

❝ You’re both visiting?! ❞ He exclaimed in awe, huffing a breath of laughter before he enquired with a smile, eventually pulling his arm back to himself, ❝ How’s life? ❞ He hesitated for a moment, gravely reminded by the war that he assumed their group was still in the middle of. ❝ Are things at home okay? ❞

from a young age, roman had been convinced that nothing was permanent except for family. he had been raised to think that way. whenever it came time to skip town, there was often very little time for goodbyes from potential friendships. roman never really got to know friendship in that way. people would always come and go- but family? family was forever. unbreakable through times of hardship or time spent apart. each night they always went to bed under the same roof, and roman never had to know what it felt like to be alone in the world.

then green came along, and the scrawny orphan without a home became so much more to roman than some passerby on the street. he was one of the few people that somehow managed to get under roman’s skin; one of the few people that roman didn’t mind having around. it had been heartbreaking, having to leave his first and only true friend behind when the family packed up and left town yet again. though, there had always been a feeling at the time that it wasn’t the last he’d see of green- that, somehow, they’d cross paths again.

family was forever. even if it was in the form of the most unlikely duo, who chose to be each other’s family while all the other ones left.

”ro?”

his expression was almost always unreadable. however, the familiar voice was enough for him to seem a bit softer around the edges than he normally would. green.” he watched as green made his way closer, the man sitting down beside him and pulling him into some sort of hug. roman, ever the touchy-feely type, tried not to cringe just slightly. anyone else and he probably would have pushed them away. with green, he instead opted to gently - almost awkwardly - reach a hand up over the man’s shoulder, gently patting his back. before he could answer any of the man’s questions, frank came over, cocktail in hand.

leaning back in his seat, he looked towards his husband as he pointed out, “it was time for a vacation, don’t you think?” anywhere that included fancy cocktails, good weather, and a little bit of day drinking? he doubted frank needed much convincing. ”how’s life?” green’s hesitation said it all. “are things at home okay?” roman stared at the ocean, lips forming a thin line as he considered it all. how could he describe a war that had ended, yet held no true victor? both groups were struggling from the aftereffects of it all.

“getting back to normal,” he answered shortly, shifting in his seat before he elaborated, “the war’s over. for now, at least.” he never prided himself on being much of an optimist. ”i don’t know.” taking a sip of his drink, he sighed through his nose before he muttered, “i think we both lost.” that about summed it up, didn’t it?

looking towards green, he gestured towards him as he asked, “how about you? how have you been?” even with all their time apart, it felt as if they were still just as close as they’d always been.
