if there's a handbook for this, no one has bothered to share it to her. no one strutted along to tell the blonde exactly how one goes about joining a group. what to wear, where to wait, how to act. it should seem obvious (normal, border, polite), but somehow it isn't, at least not for her.
she manages to figure out the first two by pure intuition, though her normal might be akin to someone else's homeless. a massive sweater, blue and red plaid and far too large, covers her frame. boyfriend jeans, cuffed at the ankles to compensate for her stature, and distressed at the knees from years of wear, hug her hips just barely. her boots are old, half a size too big and scuffed to death. her head, adorned with shaggy blonde hair that looked vaguely brushed, was clad with a gray knit hat, pulled low over her ears. all of the clothes, if you look closely enough, are designed for a man— or, rather, a teenage boy. and yet they carry the same scent she does, and she wears them well enough to make it obvious they belonged to her.
she stands at the border for ten or so minutes before, out of pure laziness, she slides down to a seated position beside a tree. a duffel bag, packed to the brim and the zipper only mostly closed, rests behind her, completing her vagrant ensemble. one glance at her, hardly five foot three, in a ball before the tree, and you might think she's some small homeless boy. instead, she's some small, pseud-runaway woman.
a dog ambles from around the tree, business done, and each step is seemingly slow and labored. he's short and dense, easily a hundred pounds, and he grunts with each step, wearing the familiar ugly/cute face of a bulldog. with a huff, he throws himself onto her lap, and if the presence of a dog that damn near weighs as much as she does bothers her, she makes no show of it. instead, aspen absentmindedly rubs behind his ear until he dozes off, snores erupting from his body and echoing through the forest surrounding them, no doubt notifying anyone nearby of their presence.
( not eloquent but it's 4:30am )
When Edmund joined Flintlock Lodge, it’d been the first group he had ever settled down with that wasn’t a part of his family’s empire. Shoulders slumped, stood slightly behind his father, the silver fox tall and graceful but ruthless nonetheless. Beside Alfred stood Christine, holding onto the hands of two shivering children, Henry and Ida - three years ago, Edmund was a twenty one year old who refused to associate himself with this dysfunctional family unit. Christine wasn’t family, nor was Henry and Ida. And so, Eddie stood with a deep frown riddling his features, allowing for his domineering father to do all the talking.
He never had to figure out how he ought to join a group, and hopefully he’d never have to.
He exhaled smoke into the subzero air, white plumes fluttering into the sky and dispersing in the wind. Eddie found himself on the balcony of the lodge, leaning against the railing with a cigarette clasped between two fingertips. Free hand eventually raised to his face, a pair of binoculars in his grasp as he held it close enough for him to peer across the snow with his magnified vision. He only frowned upon noticing, in the distance, movement from nearby the small grove of conifers. He moved the binoculars away momentarily, chin tipping upwards before having a closer look once again.
Eddie couldn’t see it so clearly, but from what he saw, he could vaguely make out a silhouette of a person with a dog. Not anybody that Eddie could recognize, not anybody that Eddie had specifically requested to do any work outside. And so, he began to tread down the stairs, holding his walkie-talkie to his lips. ❝ There’s a stranger at the border. Somebody come with me. ❞
He trudged downhill, features stone hard and icy as he approached the newcomer, the snow crunching beneath his shoes the only signal of his arrival. ❝ Is he comfortable? ❞ Ed nodded his head towards the bulldog before looking towards the small woman. ❝ There’s a lodge uphill; it’s a lot warmer than out here, as you could imagine. ❞

it's cold , so of course , rory is inside when edmund barks his usual demands. a stranger at the border. luckily , rory wasn't sulking around in nothing more than a t-shirt and cargo pants , otherwise this wouldn't have been the job for him; he had been outside not too long ago , so instead he brands his 'winter attire': a pair of jeans a bit too tight , double socked and sneakered , yet to be stripped from his jacket as he warms himself by the fire. he was still bursting with adrenaline from earlier's task and so , he trudges not too far off from edmund who moves impressively fast. despite earlier drawbacks , he paces himself .
from afar , the stranger looks nothing too far off from a twelve year old boy doused in clothing far too big for him. but as rory advances closer , he could easily see it's a just a woman who wears clothing far too big for her , a duffel bag lounging behind her, and an incredibly hideous creature in her lap. edmund's the ones for pleasantries , but rory eyes the thing that snores almost as his loud as his father had; he worries for the poor thing. wonders if it could breathe under all that blubber. he's seen many breeds , but nothing quite like this one. it's ed's offer to aspen that derives him from his thoughts.
"here." rory strolls up to her , extends a gloved hand and flashes her his signature smirk; something not too far off from sardonic , just something that came absentmindedly natural to rory. ( especially prevelant in the presence of ed, as if his whole purpose of coming was almost to push hi buttons. something rory would never admit. )

she's sitting, distracted in the presence of the canine, that she doesn't notice the approach of the man. by the time she does, she knows if he was on the offensive, she'd be too late. awareness of her surroundings was something emphasized in the cuel household, repeated over and over again like the words of a religion. stay aware of your surroundings, stay armed, safety in numbers. her father would have an aneurysm if he saw her now, distracted and alone, her pocket knife buried in her duffel back. she'd never been the careless child, but after hawthorn, her mind hadn't been in the right place. everything was fuzzy and hard to comprehend at times, and all too often, her thoughts drew back to him. he was so goddamn responsible, and even that hadn't saved him.
the man speaks, and, though belated, she's carefully observant. he's around her age, maybe a few years older. fair hair, fair eyes, well built for a mountain. not warm, but his words are polite. she decides not to fish out the pocket knife.
[color=#4a4e54]"he's fine, just fat." she says simply, and begins the process of shoving the canine off of her. it's gentle but firm, and when his eyes open he gives her an annoyed look before slowly standing, stretching and taking his time to climb off of her. he mentions a lodge, and she knows she's in the right place; before she can respond, a second man, a little younger than her, offers her a hand.
she accepts it without hesitation, never quite the wary type, and pulls herself to her feet, brushing the debris off of her rear and glancing between the two. they're better dressed for wintry weather than she is, wearing gloves and proper coats, but she makes no show of being cold or bothered by the weather. instead: [color=#4a4e54]"i'm used to colder weather than this." she says simply, grabbing her duffel bag and fixing her hat. [color=#4a4e54]"but i did come to join, if this is the flintlock lodge?" she inquires, stuffing her hands into the pockets of the jeans, cognac gaze shifting between them, unsure who was in charge.
Colder weather than this? Ed tipped his head upwards slightly as he glanced around the snowy mountaintop; if this wasn’t the coldest place she’d lived in, then what was? Eddie thought that Flintlockers were insane for living in conditions such as these all year round. He glanced back towards her as he watched Rory help Aspen up onto her feet, then lowering his gaze to glance down at her dog. From the way it snorted when it breathed, Ed truly had to question whether it really was a dog and not some hog hybrid.
He was shaken out of his wonderment with her inquiry. ❝ This is Flintlock Lodge. ❞ Eddie confirmed, slowly sliding his gloved hands into his coat pockets as he eyed the newcomer out with a careful gaze. ❝ I’m Eddie, this is Rory. ❞ He introduced, nodding his head towards the younger man, before he held a hand out towards the duffel bag. ❝ Do you need me to carry that for you? ❞ It was only polite of him, after all, to make the offer. He could try to be a decent man every once in a while. He turned to begin the trek back up to the Lodge. ❝ There are a couple of free beds in shared rooms, so I can introduce you to a couple of people to see if you’d like to room with them. ❞ The rigidity of his words could only prove how meticulous his mind could be. The voice of authority and firmness.
