he’d been tasked with setting up traps to get rid of wolves. now he was starting to wish he had decided to play a few after-dinner games with everyone. moments into setting up the traps, he realized how bored he could get doing it all on his own. humming to himself, he set up the snares without much difficulty. he knew his way around snares and other sorts of traps, even if it was something he didn’t particularly talk much about. come on; it was easier to set up traps than to sit around waiting for the wolf pack himself.

standing up, he stretched his arms up above his head. “that should do it,” he muttered under his breath, looking at the snare before pushing on further, heading to another place to set up the last couple of snares. he shoved his hands in his pockets and absently whistled a tune as he wandered.

Wolves had become something of an issue in the more recent weeks. Eddie supposed that the winter had been cruel to the canines this year, just like it had been to the lodge. Sparse resources lead the opportunists closer to Flintlock territory; whether it was for food or what, Eddie did not know. What he did know, however, was that he didn't want wolves around, especially not when there were children around here.

It was barely a surprise to see that Eddie was somewhat dubious of Freddie's attempt at setting up traps. He had to ensure that they would definitely capture some of the creatures. And so, he slowly followed suit, tracking footprints through the snow which lead him from trap to trap. Admittedly, Fred wasn't doing too bad actually... Hands were shoved in his pockets as he heard whistling nearby, the realization that Eddie had eventually caught up to his cousin, before he wandered to Freddie's side.

❝ Are you prepared to check the traps every day? ❞ Eddie questioned casually, gaze avoiding his cousin's as he instead observed up ahead carefully. ❝ I don't want the wolves trapped for too long. Put them out of their misery sooner rather than later. ❞ Sure, they were pests, but they were also only doing what they needed to do to survive. Perhaps Eddie could relate to the canines in that way - he too would risk his life if it meant the survival of his pack.

“are you prepared to check the traps every day?”
his cousin questioned him as he caught up with freddie. he stopped whistling his absent tune and glanced over at eddie. eyes glanced back at the footprints in the snow that followed his own. and then his gaze lingered on ed once again before he ultimately turned to look ahead once more, shaking his head as he did so. “maybe. are you going to be following me then, too?” stated casually, but met with easy eyes and a subtle smirk. he was well aware that he and edmund would never get along; however, that didn’t mean that ed had to doubt him and whatever abilities he had.

he said that, while he ultimately did the same to edmund in return.

and there it seemed like eddie had a bit of a soft spot for the wolves. that, or he had more mercy on these furry pests more than he did with most people. fred wouldn’t put that past him. it had become instinct for the younger to merely shoot someone at any growing inconvenience. he was used to killing people, watching them die; he couldn’t say the same about wolves. there was something different about it… something about that said more about freddie than anything else. he didn’t stop to consider the meaning.

“look at you, being an advocate for the wolves,” he hummed. “real cute, ed. never thought i’d see the day you became so soft.” settling down with a wife, having kids... this wasn’t the edmund stirling-moray freddie once knew. though it brought him a certain satisfaction in feeling like he was doing far better in life than his cousin.

    tw. brief mention of gore

It didn't take long for Freddie to get snarky with Eddie. But, what was he expecting from his cousin after all? He was always the type to nip at him again and again, expecting to get a reaction out of it. It took a lot more than biting comments to arouse Eddie's anger, though. Instead, his brows knitted together for a split second before he flitted his gaze to look over to Freddie. He didn't have to explain himself for Freddie to realize Eddie's motives here. Of course he was double checking the traps - he couldn't trust Freddie to get the job done.

Subconsciously, Ed used the side of his shoe to wipe away some of the footprints in the snow before he began to follow nearby Fred, hands shoved into his pockets. ❝ Depends on if my schedule's busy. ❞ Eddie replied stoically, words dripping in sarcasm as he slowly caught up to his cousin.

Freddie found amusement in Eddie's next words, the genuine mercy that he had for the feral creatures. He wasn't going to deny the way he felt about the matter. With his ever-so-cynical mind, Eddie believed that the wolves deserved a swift death. People, on the other hand, meant very little to him. After all, killing a man who'd harmed another for revenge or blind rage or for material gain felt more like justice than anything. Human beings had malicious minds - if Eddie was killed, he'd probably deserve a horrendously long and drawn out death.

The wolves on the other hand... they killed for survival. Cultivation of the world around them. They deserved better than a slow and agonizing death. They were ferocious beasts and yet they were never wicked in their ways; it was a quality that Eddie had grown to quite respect. Eddie rolled his eyes at being called cute. If laughing at Ed was what'd help Freddie sleep at night, then he wasn't going to stop him. But, he did choose to huff a short breath of laughter at Freddie's comment, choosing to stay silent otherwise.

After all, he preferred for people to fall for what Freddie had fallen for. People could believe that Eddie had become soft, a family man and a man who would respect the world around him, but he was born a Stirling; he'd not even bat an eyelid when severing a person's cervical artery if the opportunity arose. And, honestly, as Ed silently walked beside his cousin, he found that Freddie would be good proof of that very fact if it wasn't for the fact that he needed his family alive and breathing. Dammit, Freddie.
