    Eyes scanned the pages of a book as Ed sat on the floor in the living room, pointer finger following word for word. His free hand kept baby Tommy sitting up straight beside him as he played quietly with a toy. There were all these books on how to be a parent, but none on how to be a dad; it surely made it difficult for him to know right from wrong.

Eddie couldn't get his father's advice on how to raise a son - his father was dead - and so he'd gone into parenthood blindly. Perhaps they were too young to have children, a part of Ed would sometimes doubt before dismissing the thought swiftly. Most importantly, there were no books on how to raise a deaf baby.

His gaze shifted from the ASL book on his lap and up to check on his daughter, Charlotte babbling incoherently as she dragged the toy she was playing with loudly across the floor before squealing at the clattering sound she produced. Ed tipped his head ever-so-slightly as he observed for a moment before he returned to reading. Tommy shifted around, seemingly losing interest in the toy he had been focused on moments ago and instead began to clamber onto Ed's lap.

Moving the book aside, Ed turned his head to look down at his son, kissing the top of his head before signing a new shorthand gesture he'd learned to Tommy. As he moved his free hand, he quietly mumbled ❝ I love you. ❞ beneath his breath, Tommy blinking up at Ed's signing, then to his face, before reaching his hand out to try touch Eddie's face. The tiniest of smiles played on Ed's lips momentarily; it was almost as if Tommy already knew what his father was trying to tell him.

despite being a children’s entertainer, joker had never really been all that wonderful with children. as part of the job, he was told to learn basic sign language, which he did. he knew basic things like ‘hello’, ‘how are you?’, ‘my name is joker’. of course, ‘i love you’ was a very easy sign to spot, practically ever man, woman, person, and child knew the sign from a young age thanks to a teacher or a family member.

a smile cracked across his panted face, making his painted smile even wider as he looked over the scene. usually, he wasn’t one to find something cute, but this was a sight to behold. he hadn’t seen children in so long, and it was honestly refreshing. “they seem very cute.” offered the man as he stepped towards the scene. “what are their names?”

She spoke as well, but she knew her son didn't understand most of what she signed to him. She then kissed Eddie's cheek and moved to scoop up Charlotte from the floor, kissing her cheek as well "How dare you have to share him with brother, huh?" she grinned, holding her close to her. "Well I have to share him with you and brother amd you're both very demanding" she teased, gently poking her stomach making Charlotte giggle.

Blake had no idea what she was doing as a parent, being a parent or hell being married always scared her. She was now married and a mom, though the task of mom was made harder by giving her two kids right off the bat. Nobody knew how to be a parent, let alone a parent to a child who couldn't hear. She looked to Joker when he spoke, they hadn't met but seeing as he was in the lodge and made it this close to her kids she assumed he was a new member. "Charlotte and Thomas" She told him, rubbing her daughter's back "And I'm Blake, I don't think we've met"

— ah, parenthood... freddie tried not to crinkle his nose as he watched edmund kiss the top of his son’s head. he’d never see the allure of it. the last thing fred could ever see himself volunteering to do; sign himself up to take care of some pain-in-the-ass child for eighteen years, give or take. he hated how much eddie seemed to accept that role… he guessed someone in the family had to take one for the team.

while blake went to pick charlotte up, talking to that joker guy, fred walked past. he settled down on the sofa a short ways from edmund, eyeing the kid in his arms. he tried not to come across as nauseated as he truly felt. a smile made its way across his features.

“he’s got your-” he paused. all babies looked the same to him. “eyes.” it was worth a shot. leaning forward, he rested his chin in the palm of his hand, arm propped up on his knee. “never thought i’d see you of all people with a kid,” he hummed. he glanced towards charlotte, “or two.” and a wife. some things were best left kept to himself, he guessed.

    Eddie's eyes darted upwards, lips parted ever-so-slightly as he glanced over towards Joker. It was almost refreshing to Eddie to see somebody seeing him in a softer light. He was used to being so jagged and violent that it felt like it had become all that he was - in many cases that was, in fact, true - but it seemed that Joker was introduced early on to another dimension of Edmund Stirling-Moray. A sort of compassion and undying love he had towards family. Was he a family man? Probably not - he was barely a real man on some days - but he tried for these two children.

He glanced over towards Blake as she began to speak to Joker, Eddie lowering his gaze to look at Tom again. Just when he thought nobody was looking, he poked his tongue out playfully, earning a gurgling laugh from Tommy. That was when he saw Freddie settling down on the sofa nearby, Eddie avoiding his gaze entirely as he briefly looked back over towards Blake and Joker. ❝ He's got your eyes. ❞ Finally, Eddie turned his head to look over towards Fred. He hesitated for a moment, and then realized that that was probably closest he'd ever get to receiving any sort of kindness from Freddie.

❝ I thought so too. ❞ He replied, looking back down towards his son who wriggled around on Ed's lap before reaching out to grab onto one of the buttons of his plaid shirt. Fred continued to speak, this time about the twins in general. Ed didn't expect to have children, either, but he'd never call either of them an accident even if it had been completely unexpected. ❝ Neither, honestly. They weren't planned, but I wouldn't have it any other way. ❞ Call him soft, but Ed really did have a soft spot for his children.
