☁ hayley knew how she seemed to most of the residents of the lodge. a young mother, doting over a newborn, fretting about whether those around her wore coats and ate three meals a day. she knew she seemed mild, domesticated, like anything but what she was.
the truth was, before she'd shown up to the lodge all those months ago, pregnant and confused, hayley chase had been a child of the apocalypse. she'd wielded a knife like an extra limb, she'd possessed a punch that could lay a grown man down, and she'd had it in her to take a life. she wasn't some wicked woman, but one of circumstance. the reality of the world beyond the mountain was a grim one, one that the head knew much too well. despite her activities as of late, that woman was still very much real. despite coddling hope and worrying about the members of the lodge, she was still a woman willing to fight, to kill, for those she cared about. she was a good person, but in a world like the one they lived in, good wasn't as easily outlined as it had once been.
she'd passed on word throughout the group at dinner the night before. noon, everyone was to meet in the cafeteria for mandatory training. once people began to trickle in, sitting at a few of the tables she hadn't moved out of the way, the brunette cleared her throat, arms crossing in front of her.
❝we're not at war right now,❞ she said, voice carrying through the room to the ears of the various people within, ❝but i can't say for how long that statement will be true. there was once a truce between the badlands and the lodge, but i can't say for how long the peace we have now will last. they have a new leader, and from what i've heard, they're quick to hit and volatile. we need to be prepared if the worst happens. so anyone who's capable needs to learn to protect themselves. i'd like everyone to find a partner.❞ she instructed, making a motion for them to do so. she hated this, hated having to prepare the residents for a potential war, but she also wouldn't have anyone caught defenseless.
