thorne woke up with smoke filling the room. at first, he was confused. had he had some kind of weird dream? had he left his window open and smog had gotten in (smog didn't work like that, that didn't make sense.)? what had he done that meant this much smoke?

and then, he remembered.

the oven, from last night. he'd thought he'd turned it off, but he hadn't, had he? he'd left it on, and something had gone wrong. maybe something had finally set on fire, thorne didn't know. just that he knew that the smoke wasn't from something small. it had to hit some kind of gas, or thorne didn't even know. he was twelve, after all.

sitting up, the twelve year-old's first thoughts were on why in the world he had the worst luck. his second thought was blind terror. there was a smoke leaking into his room, and he had no clue what to do. he couldn't jump out the window, he was on a second story. he started to shake, panicked grey eyes flicking around his room to look for anything that could help him get out of there.

okay, he had to calm down. he couldn't lose it, otherwise he'd die. okay, what had the fire department told his entire school? standing up off his bed, thorne pulled the pillowcase off his pillow, covering his mouth and nose with the cloth. his eyes stung and streamed as he stared at his closed bedroom door.

nervously, he checked the handle. warm. wait, what did that mean, was that good or bad? thorne couldn't remember, oh god he couldn't remember, and he was going to die here, burnt to a crisp-

like the idiot he was, he went with his instinct and opened the door. immediately, he became aware of the inferno that was taking over his home, licking at paint and photographs. it felt like a physical blast, and thorne wondered if jumping out the window might work too. but then, he remembered.

rose.

she was further down the hall than thorne. if his parents hadn't come in to get him, they couldn't have gotten rose. coughing and stumbling and avoiding walls of flame surrounding him, thorne pushed down the hall, lungs and body screaming at him to get the hell out of there. the heat was.. indescribable. it singed his hair, he could feel it drying his tear trail.

and then, thorne made it to rose's room. coughing and grabbing the handle, thorne yelped as he realized how hot the handle really was. it made sense, it was right beneath their kitchen. but he needed to get her out of there. ignoring the screaming sensation on his hand, he pushed at the door.

and then stopped.

a wall of flame met him, everywhere. he could only catch a glimpse of a cradle before he had to shut the door, smoke and heat and the realization that nobody could survive in that room clouding his eyes with tears. maybe his parents had grabbed rose?

that didn't make sense, though. with a dry sob mixed with a cough, thorne raced as fast as his tired lungs could let him, nearly falling down the stairs.

the cold night air mixed with the screams of sirens greeted him. someone was coming, thank goodness. dropping his pillowcase and coughing as he stumbled to what he hoped was his parents, thorne clung tight to what he hoped was his mom, sobbing into her shirt.

"thorne, baby, you're okay!" his mom muttered, holding him tight as thorne's father hugged the two. "there was so much, we called and they told us not to go up there.." her welsh accent was tinged with sorrow.

if they hadn't been up there..

"this is all my fault." thorne hiccuped into his mom's shirt, pale eyes screwing shut. "honey, no, it's not.." his mom was crying too, he could feel the way her breath hitched. his dad murmured something to them that thorne couldn't catch. "rose was in there, i tried, it was too hot and i-i-" his own words choked him, and his father pulled him out of his mother's shirt, grey eyes staring into his son's matching eyes.

"thorne, it wasn't your fault, there was nothing you could do. nothing, do you hear me?" his father stared, not bothering to brush tears out of his eyes. thorne nodded, and let his father pick him up as thorne buried his face in his father's neck.

finally, thorne dared to look out at the remains, watching through streaming eyes as he watched everything he knew burned before him.
