APPEARANCE otis is 5'8" and has a fairly unimpressive build. he usually stands slightly slumped, but when approached by an authority or stranger, tries to appear taller than he actually is. he currently has close cut black hair, but always lets it grow out until someone comments on it. he has a pair of large, striking brown eyes, full, heart-shaped lips, and a smooth, tanned complexion. he usually wears hoodies and flannels (he doesn't appear to be picky, but he has particular ones for specific occasions), and often throws on a beanie if it's colder than normal.
PERSONALITY a walking contradiction. excessive smoking, lying, laziness, and a lack of conventional intelligence, otis' chivalric-like
MORALS are his guiding principles. he took phrases like "never disrespect a woman" to heart ever since he heard them in grade school. it's true; he doesn't step out of line even with pressure from his peers. though otis isn't the type to openly profess his distaste for anyone, it doesn't alter the fact that he's extremely
JUDGMENTAL. he scrutinizes and picks out minor faults in someone immediately upon meeting them (he claims to have an "impeccable judge of character"). this has indirectly resulted in his
ALIENATION from society (and in ways, conventionality). but no matter how closed off he may be, otis is extremely
SENSITIVE and
EMOTIONAL. he often takes insults to heart, as they shine light upon his own insecurities. otis also takes many decisions on
IMPULSE, which range from splurging on things he doesn't need to staying in the rocky mountains for a week (that being said, when he says he's going to do something, he does. otis always acts on his words). otis also claims to be
CAREFREE and careless (a convincing argument), but thrives off of praise and appreciation. yes, he's definitely a loner, but one of the reasons he continued to swim and dive competitively was because of the crowds that cheered for him. and finally, despite his
CYNICISM, otis enjoys talking to others, so much so that he considers himself an
EXTROVERT. not everyone's his friend, but the people who are find him easy to be around. and in the rare occasion of him forming a true bond with someone, he can be extremely
CARING and
PASSIONATE.
HISTORY tw for mentions of smoking, depression, and suicide otis was born into a middle-class family in seoul, but moved to america as soon as his father received a job offer in oregon. though he remembers little to nothing about korea, otis tries his best to retain parts of his culture, such as speaking in his native language, attending family gatherings and festivals, and using his given name whenever possible. when otis attended elementary school, his teachers could detect issues with his academic performance. he never paid attention in class, doodled often, and was found roaming around the school during class time. they suspected that it had something to do with a learning disorder; it was eventually discovered that he was dyslexic. after hearing this, his parents wasted no time in sending him away to one of the finest boarding schools in the country, cauldon academy. when otis reflects back on it now, he can confidently declare that his years at cauldon were some the worst, but most interesting, he had ever experienced. his roommates were horrid, the dorms smelled like rotten cheese, and the teachers, though he liked some, could never understand his self-proclaimed hidden talents and intellect. but it wasn't all bad. in his freshman year, he joined the swim and dive team. along with enjoying being in and around water, otis knew the sport made him different. though their team was relatively small and unsung, that fact in itself made him feel special. though he knew it wasn't the amount of attention they deserved, it helped them work harder. during his stay at cauldon, he also spent a lot of time wandering. whether it was around campus, in a park two blocks away, or cycling around a city he had never been in before, otis spent most of his time "out". his favorite place to hang around was at a center for disabled children right beside the school. he enjoyed watching them, reading them stories, or just sitting sitting around -- kids gave otis a certain energy that no one else could. but despite all he learned, his grades and general performance were still lacking. once his parents got wind of it, they sent him home in a fit of rage. they convinced him to fix his life, stop smoking, and though it seemed impossible, possibly get into medical school. otis felt bad for consistently disappointing his parents, but knew there was no way he could achieve something like that on his own. so with some money, a few forged documents, he tried to cheat his way into a decent school. this attempt failed, and it only resulted in him getting kicked out of his house (no jailtime, because his mom was the one who caught him on the way to the exam). otis found himself gravitating toward the disabled children center he spent time at during cauldon. he told one of the workers that he was interested in helping people, and that he just didn't have the experience. after some tears and a convincing argument, they gave in and said that they would get him an assistant position at the local hospice. otis' experience there was alright at first. yeah, he didn't know what the esophagus was (pronounced ee-soh-fa-gus), but he tried to work hard because it was something he had a genuine interest in. he ended up liking his job, a little bit - he held people's hands, told them about his day, and sang them songs in order for them to pass with a smile on their faces. having hundreds of sick and miserable people around him without possessing any knowledge of how to really help them really brought a guy down (however, there was an incident where someone was planning to drown themselves. otis jumped in and saved their life, but he refuses to talk about it). he ended up leaving, and got a lot more depressed than normal. he went back to cauldon only to talk to his old counselor, who suggested he do what he love, and most of all, be a little consistent. the advice worked. otis went back to the hospice and resumed his old job. he did get sad from time to time, but figured that his presence alleviated people's burdens..just a little he also got into swimming again, worked at the center for disabled children, and is currently thinking about going to university to pursue a nursing degree.
