He stared down at the packet in his hands. It was a bad idea. Bad idea. He knew it wouldn't work--but it was really the only thing he could think of. The markers were brightly colored and he'd tested them on paper--they worked, still. He hoped the kid liked them. He hoped Gray would accept them, period. He knew the guy was angry at him. He knew the guy had a right to be. But...
He also needed to do something to try and fix this. He had a plan--sort of. It seemed terrible if he thought about it for too long, so he'd decided not to. He just--was going to go for it. So he searched, eventually finding Gray in the common room. He approached cautiously, the markers in his hand. "Um--hey." He looked nervous, uncertain. "I--wanted to....talk to you?"

Gray was angry at pretty much everyone. Well, except the newbies - they hadn't done anything wrong, and there was no reason for him to lump them in with the others, though part of him was inclined to think that all of them were the same. Who knows, maybe they would have tried to help him, maybe they'd have left him. He didn't know them well enough to make any guesses, so he tried to reserve his judgement of them.
Joh on the other hand, had tried to help him, but inevitably left him. He didn't feel any guilt about his bitterness to the Dictator, because if he had really wanted, he could have had him out. He could have been saved if Johannes had applied himself, applied the group, but no. He'd hesitated, and if Gray had done the same he'd be dead.
He'd been spending a lot of time by himself lately, but he still found himself craving human interaction, even if he was totally and unwilling to seek it out. The best next thing seemed to be hanging out in the common room, where there was a lot of activity and where he could occasionally get a quick conversation with someone in. Something surface level, but much better than nothing.
But now Johannes was here, approaching him and asking to talk. He gave the older man a hard look for a minute, almost telling him to fuck off, but he was the leader and this might be important. Maybe that package was something he needed brought to one of the other groups. Traded with Saint Peters, maybe? "What?"

Looking at Gray was certainly not fun. He wasn't able yet to just....tell himself he'd done his 'best' and it was fine because Gray was alive and safe, now.
That wasn't enough, not by a long shot. The teen staring at him could have died. Because of his negligence. At that thought, his package and his hopes for an apology seemed way too....cheap. But--what else was he going to do? He cleared his throat, hesitating before tightening his grip on the markers and took one--a pink one, as luck would have it--to show him the contents. "I...I wanted--" Fuck. "This--this is stupid, I mean, this is just--" He shook the package a bit, and shook his head. "This isn't...I mean, I need to apologize. And I wanted to...bring you something but I know that's not--" He forced a cough, and shook his head. "I know that's not--a good, like--thing, but--I wanted. To do something." He exhaled softly, eyes sliding off the kid. "So. I'm sorry. I--I really didn't--I didn't do everything I could have--or should have--for you. And I--it wasn't--I mean, I--" He couldn't say it out loud--that Gray could have died. But neither could he insist that Gray wouldn't have. He would have fed him. For as long as it took, but--that wasn't the only risk. He was botching this. How could he successfully apologize for something like this?

He could look at Johannes without feeling guilt, though why should he feel guilt? Aside from some harsh words, he'd never done anything to him. But he didn't have an easy time looking at him, either. The man had left him for dead, and Gray could only assume the older man didn't care what happened for him. He was pretty sure even the families he'd fled from had worried about him when he disappeared, that they still wondered if he'd survived. They missed him, he thought.
They wouldn't leave him to die.
Gray crossed his arms as Johannes stumbled through his explanation, though he wasn't really sure what he was trying to say or where he was going with this. He'd brought him something bad, but he wanted to do something, and he was sorry. The pink marker he took out helped to indicate what Joh had gotten him, which caused him to raise his eyebrow a little bit. The teen held out his hand, silently asking to see what was in it. "So what I'm getting is... you're sorry."

Now would be a great time for Rudy's help to kick in. Giving meetings was easier with his advice--but talking to individuals was just as terrifying as it had always been. He swallowed, nodding. That--at least that had come across. "Yes. Yeah. Um--And I just--thought maybe these--" He bit his lip. "I'm not trying to bribe you into--forgiving me I just--saw them in St. Peters and--" He handed over the bag, still clutching that one pink one for dear life. "I handled--that. Worse than I've handled almost anything else, at all, and--I'm sorry, it wasn't--I didn't like, go, oh, lets just leave him -- I didn't--want. That. I know that doesn't mean it didn't happen but--you were right, before, I--I was overthinking and I didn't actually...do...anything."

While Johannes stammered through his explanation, Gray took the bag and looked inside. Markers. He was no artist, despite very much wishing he was, and in fact the only times he'd been seen doing anything involving markers was when he drew on Johannes and Drew. He... really didn't understand the Dictator, it was like he wanted to discourage Gray from drawing on people, but kept nudging him towards doing it. "You're such an enabler." He muttered under his breath, looking up at Johannes as he started moving on to the second part of his appeal.
"Yeah." He said bluntly, not sugar coating it but not adding any edge to his words. He'd let them fall like a bludgeon, not a blade. "You handled that as bad as you could, and I would have died." Sometimes, just letting the words be words was far more effective than anything else. "And markers aren't going to make me forgive you." He lifted up the bag as he spoke. "I don't know that anything will."

It was painful. It was shameful. To hell with Gray being punished for writing dick on J's forehead--this was shameful. Johannes felt it burning in his cheeks and he nodded, quickly, immediately. "I know--" He knew very well this was...not really a bribe for forgiveness. The scale of what had happened meant there really wasn't anything he could do to move this along. "...But. Ah. That's--what I have. Um. I'm sorry.I want....to prove....that you can." He hesitated. This was getting too mushy. Gray didn't want to hear promises. "So I guess. We'll see."
It took him another moment, but it was clear he had something else to say building on his tongue, when he finally exhaled with some exasperation. "I didn't--I know those won't--they're not, I just--they were at St. Peters. And...who else is gonna put them to use."

He arched an eyebrow when Johannes said the words "I want to prove that you can." The hell was that supposed to mean? "That I can what... Draw on people's faces?"
