alright. jerome hemingway was raised with a very sheltered lifestyle. when the electricity went out, his parents were quick to keep him locked away from the outside world. they often fed him the idea that if he went outside, he would be killed, or beaten, or severely harmed for his affluent lifestyle. they assured him that they would return to a normal lifestyle once the electricity came back - and they stuck to that ideal for many, many years. growing up, jerome's closest form of friendship was the family's nanny, alice, though that was more a caretaker role and less-so friendship. she was more of a motherly figure to j than his parents were. when she left, he felt severely lonely and all alone. his parents were often dismissive of him in his teens, only getting involved whenever he spoke about interests in leaving the house.

one day their house was broken into, and jerome had no choice but to flee from the house. his parents never left the house - and the thieves burned the place to the ground. it was a very traumatizing moment for j, especially since that house was the only part of the world he really knew.

eventually he ran into his best friend eben viljoen who basically saved his life by letting jerome tag along with him. though their relationship is toxic, jerome wasn't raised to think that a friendship was any different than that. he's slowly starting to realize that it's not normal, though....


personality-wise, jerome is very kind and gentle. i often stress that he's a "gentleman, with emphasis on gentle." it really seems like there isn't a bad bone in his body. he would never go out of his way to hurt someone. just because he's kind, though, doesn't mean he's painfully soft, wide-eyed, and innocent. he has an air of quiet confidence about him, and isn't afraid to quietly insert his opinion into a conversation when he sees fit. overall, he's actually really brave, and he doesn't get enough credit for it.
