❝ give me a kiss like a kick in the teeth — proposal, open . ❞ - STIRLING. - 08-08-2020

He barely liked her half the time; she was so fiercely beautiful and often too much to handle. So sensitive with all those emotions and yet savage and composed all the same. She confused him terribly and he despised the fact he actually enjoyed being around her sometimes. Other times, it often felt easier to just kill her.

Would he miss her if she was gone?

Usually, he’d say no. Whatever he had with her, he could find with any other woman and be perfectly satisfied but, as time went on with her, he kind of enjoyed the idea of having Josephine Van Doren, the woman that every man seemed to want. He would miss what he had with her, but mainly because it would be such a hassle to start afresh with somebody new. William possessed indolence like it was second nature to him. And, in many ways, it truthfully was; he’d only do something if it was outright necessary for him to do so, otherwise, why should he waste his energy on something which seemed pointless to him?

He despised the concept of commitment, let alone one with a child in the near future, but he’d admittedly been led astray upon mingling with the wrong crowd. A woman who could kiss him as easily as she could slit his throat. Upon learning that he was the father to Joey’s unborn baby, it wasn’t like he could so easily walk away from it as he had once done with Ophelia.

Unlike Ophelia, William was stuck with Joey right here in Flintlock Lodge, plus even when he made the quick attempt to walk away, it felt as if Joey clung onto William for support. She was a desperate woman, clingy even though she’d never dare to express such an opinion of herself. William could feel it as clear as day, though; she could attest to the fact that William was as much to blame and so ought to take on some responsibility, but in reality she was nothing more than a scared young woman who wasn’t resilient enough to live without a pillar of strength like William.

This was not a good foundation for a marriage proposal.

Although he was empty, devoid of all feeling, he could still sense in himself that he was nearly sickened with conflicting thoughts. He didn’t love her, surely - love seemed like such a passionate word when it didn’t sit right with him, that thought of feeling anything for another human being. But, without cringing, he managed to stride through the lounge area where he recalled seeing Joey earlier with a large group of people, before his cerulean blue gaze landed on the heavily pregnant woman. ❝ I have something I need to ask you. ❞ Need - the suggestion of duty and honor as a traditional Stirling family member.

He’d been raised in a way which affirmed the fact that a bastard baby was unacceptable. Marriage before the birth of a child, or at least the intent to marry, was the norm in this bloodline. The child was due very soon - William gave it less than a month before he’d be forced into the role of an active father. The thought alone was horrifying to say the least, but he had to uphold his duties as a Stirling. Tradition over what he truly wished for. And, perhaps in his contemplation, he had in fact foolishly deluded himself into believing that maybe marriage could be all right.

❛ I love you ❜ was only a word; it didn’t have to mean anything.

He’d spent his whole life feeling nothing at all, maybe a couple of baggage on the side would not be too different after all. Admittedly, this whole fiasco had William feeling somewhat uneasy. Legs wobbled slightly, almost astronaut-like, as taut brows bunched together with uncertainty. When he looked at Joey, there was no gleam in his eyes. They were vacant and glazed in the very same way as when he’d kill another person. There was no heartfelt emotion or feeling there; there was nothing there at all.

❝ Stand up. No - I’ll sit down. ❞ He felt almost stupid for the brief fumble, shifting around rigidly before sitting down next to Joey, peering over to her. ❝ I have something for you; I think you’ll like it. ❞ She wanted him around, after all - she’d be stupid to turn him down. Shoving his hand deep into the pocket of his trousers, he felt around for a ring. He hoped it would fit her finger, otherwise she could probably look for another ring which was more suitable. William would guess that he was smiling, a strained closed-lip smile whilst he stalled. He was still for a moment, only then taking notice of the silence in the room as curious eyes began to wonder what he was up to.

Inquisitive fuckers.

Next, he revealed the ring, pinching it between two fingers as he held it out to her. He swallowed hard, intense gaze searching her eyes. With the same lack of authenticity as always, he then proclaimed, ❝ I love you. Marry me, Joey. ❞

Please wait for Scully to reply with Joey first!

Re: ❝ give me a kiss like a kick in the teeth — proposal, open . ❞ - JOSEPHINE - 08-09-2020

[align=center][div style="width: 400px; text-align: justify; font-size: 12px; font-family: calibri; letter-spacing: .6px; color: #494949;"]a feeling of dread has been growing within joey ever since elijah pulled the trigger on aiden. the sound of her lifeless body crumbling to the floor, the realization of it being another flintlock, eli's hand tightly over her mouth to prevent her from escaping... it plays like flashes in her mind when she's left to her own devices for too long. the nerves and terror comes from the possible repercussions when it all comes out. but that isn't it, she just had to figure out she's pregnant within the week following, not only ruining her fun with william, but also giving elijah motivation and ammo for blackmail. jealousy and anger at finding out it is not his kid, eli branded her as a whore, slut, and every other misogynistic word for a woman; then threatened total blame on joey for the murder, even though she didn't pull the trigger or even ask or instruct him to do so.

to everyone, though, the blonde should probably be beyond happy; expecting a child and her recent promotion to reaper, everything seems to be going her way. but no one knows she was present for some of the biggest news and mystery within the lodge. edmund's threats against the backdrop of everything else and her entire support system, the remaining van dorens, being in flintlock, joey can't risk anything.

as a way of survival, josephine turned to will. neither wanted this baby, but her fear of the man prevented her from just ending the pregnancy in the beginning; she doubted she'd get out of that alive, it gave him an easy cover and joey refused to give it to him. and even though she doesn't want the whole 'family' thing, she prefers to have will as a shield. being associated with a stirling like this would hopefully soften any blow eddie could throw at her from the murder, will's anger and murderous tendencies would hopefully be enough to keep eli away, and, finally, having another parent there gave her someone to shove the kid off onto and truly not be reminded for a time.

also, she's strangely has found some comfort in running to william at times. it's allowed her to keep her own family safe, out of the shit storm she's created, and given a small sense of security, showing up on at his door and knowing no one can get to her for a few hours. it wouldn’t exactly matter who is with her on those nights, she’s not too picky. although, now, she probably would love to be spending the time with lorena, but figures it would be best post partem.

joey needs to take a break from being on her feet, but still wants to continue on with the conversations so the little group shifts, joey taking a seat and looking up at the rest, nodding along and having a light smile on her face, then letting out a laugh at a joke aspen makes. even though she hears will call her name, joey doesn’t make much of an effort to look; she knows if he really want to talk to her, he’ll confront her and pull her aside without any problem.

and just like that, there he is, inserting himself into the group. she slowly turns her head to look up at him as he speaks. oh, what is this now? her eyebrow raises, tilting her head to the right. “ if i have to get up, it’s not worth it, “ she sighs apathetically, eyes rolling. joey doesn’t have the energy to deal with any bullshit at the minute. she watches his hand search through his pocket, what is he doing? she never cut will out to be the gifting type, and even if he is, she finds it hard to believe he went out of his way to get her something.

i love you. marry me, joey.

a snort of a laugh leaves her closed mouth, a hand covering her mouth, a couple more laughs going through her chest. “ [color=#990000]funny, “ she slowly points at will, still not filling realizing what’s really happening. joey looks up at the crowd around them, but no one else is laughing. her face contorts in confusion, looking back at will then she finally really looks at the ring. oh, fuck. he’s serious. her eyes dart to the faces around her once more, looking for someone to break, they were all just really selling this, right? slowly, she makes eye contact with will again, a small, single huff of a laugh in disbelief.

[color=#990000]no... “ she says quietly, eyes light a deer caught in headlights. she shakes her head and swallows hard, looking away. cheeks begin to feel hot, getting a vibrant pink color. what is this? first, he tries to get out of any parental duties and now he’s proposing? in front of the whole fucking lodge? and now she looks like the bad one.

joey’s jaw juts out, shaking her head, “ [color=#990000]i’m not going to be your fucking trophy housewife. “ she snaps, glaring at will as she pushes herself onto her feet.

the new world was a place of lawlessness. one would think there wouldn’t be any rules to follow at all, except if you wanted to try and find yourself a group to seek refuge in. for the stirling family, however, even if rules seemed thrown out the window, tradition would always stand tall. looming. an ever-present reminder that stirling family values and ideals ought to be upheld first over anything. even over personal beliefs.

no one could expect a stirling to think with their heart. it was a foolish idea to even think about it.

over time, it appeared others were starting to forget about it all. from the stir that franklin caused, there came a ripple. what would alfred have to say about his own son leaving the family, and for another man? about a bastard child? those were the hypothetical questions and scenarios that were often best not to think about. fred often tried not to think about it. not everyone could be the perfect one in the family.

it was a heavy crown atop fred’s head. he carried it with grace; he adhered to the family values loyally. painfully so. though sometimes, he admitted that the weight was often overwhelming. on days he felt like the crown started to slip to one side, heavy with the burden of just how imperfect of a stirling he was behind the scenes.

as he sat around - some people in their own small groups, some simply on their own - he watched with curious eyes as will wandered over to joey. then, as he went down on one knee. he had to say he was at least impressed. he shouldn’t have expected anything less from his brother. he felt almost relieved - why had he doubted him in the first place?

though as joey snorted with laughter, taking a moment or two to realize how serious it was -- then for her final answer, he had to say that he was thoroughly surprised. as if he hadn’t even expected “no” to be an option.

usually fred would stand up and intervene. find some way to make the story about himself. instead he sat glued to his seat, eyes darting between joey and will. whether it be from secondhand embarrassment - or out of sheer surprise - he stayed put. painfully silent.

Re: ❝ give me a kiss like a kick in the teeth — proposal, open . ❞ - MAXINE. - 08-19-2020

[align=center][div style="width: 350px; text-align: justify; font-family: helvetica; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 1.4;"]there were many similarities when it came to the stirling and van doren families, one of use to be the strong dedication to following family traditions. though, starting with their grandparent’s generation, they began to draw a line when it came to personal affairs and relationships, ultimately deciding that they were free to do whatever their heart desired when it came to marriage and things of that nature. even if they did have traditions regarding that like the stirling’s, the van dorens had almost no more strong family traditions left. ever since the house fire, the traditions began to dwindle down to the point where they were now and it only grew worse when the remaining siblings began to get picked off one by one. without their once strong legacy to fall back on and only four known siblings remaining, they didn’t feel the need to keep up anymore with the rest of the traditions they once held high.

max tended to stick close to the other three siblings for the most part, including now as she sat in the little group with the younger two, listening to the conversation as she pulled her legs up to hug them close to her chest. she didn't say much, only nodding along to certain parts of the conversation that stuck out to her and laughing along to the jokes that aspen would make. it wasn't long before her attention was on william as he made his way across the room to joesphine, skeptical eyes watching his movements as she tried to figure out what he was doing.

her breath had caught in her throat when she heard the question that will asked joey, her eyebrows furrowing together. her mouth hung open for a brief second in surprise, blue eyes darting back and forth between her sister and william. max was never really vocal about her distaste for the man, but the question leaving his mouth had made her stomach turn into knots as she waited for her sister to catch onto the fact that he was serious. max lowered her head and rested her chin on her knees to try and hide the fact that she was biting her lip - a nervous habit she picked up when she was younger.

a part of her felt bad (probably due to the secondhand embarrassment she started to feel for him), but max felt relieved when joey had said no to his proposal. seb, on the other hand, was quick to let out a cheer. ”hell yeah! girl power, you tell him jo-" he cut himself off as max quickly elbowed him in his side to quiet down. in different circumstances, max would have agreed with his excitement since joey stood her ground, max was proud of her for not bending herself backwards to please anyone, something that she herself was guilty of. once upon a time, max was also asked that same question and instead of looking out for herself like joey had, she accepted it and the family saw how that turned out for max. she stopped seb because william scared her. he was an arrogant man and if she had to take a guess, having joey turn him down in a room full of people watching, there was going to be some part of him that didn’t like that and she didn’t want seb to add fuel to that fire.

other than an awkward clear of her throat as she looked back towards the other two, max did what she did best and remained quiet, waiting to see how things played out.
