HYPNOTIC [open, Badlanders] - CATALYST - 01-28-2019
//they're not here for trouble but oops
Okay, so they may have used Flintlock as an example of who their groupmates could attack as opposed to each other. Which meant whatever truces or treaties other leaders had arranged were off. Since it was really only a matter of time before one of their people decided to pick a fight, they figured they'd just poke around a little bit, see what they would inevitably be up against. (Likely not by their choice or order, since hiking up this mountain once was annoying enough. They weren't about to do anything that would require doing it again anytime soon.) So they'd grabbed Gabe, choosing the boy because he'd kept his nose relatively clean lately and wasn't badly injured (something that wasn't true of Michael, the other obvious option), but the thing that sealed Gabe as the one they wanted to bring is that there was no way anyone would see him and think that this was some sort of attack. As much as they hoped the boy would continue on his current path and become a real rough-and-tumble Badlander, there was no denying that he just wasn't intimidating. "Remind me never to do this again." Cat grumbled, drawing their jacket closer around their shoulders. Jeez, it was fugging cold. Why would anyone wanna live here? If they weren't already within sight of the Lodge, or as determined not to waste all this time and energy, they'd probably just turn back and go home. Home. Right, the Badlands was home, as much as any place could be. //open to everyone but tagging [member=2996]BEATLES[/member] [member=9457]HAYLEY[/member] [member=3586]BRENDAN[/member]
GENERAL welcome to the end of eras, ice has melted back to life ⇥ Given name is Scott Mathew Darrow ⇥ Goes only by Catalyst or Cat ⇥ Assigned male at birth ⇥ Agender ⇥ They/Them pronouns only ⇥ Twenty-one ⇥ Born 11/27/17 ⇥ Sagittarius ⇥ Real time aging ⇥ Top Dog (leader) of the Badlands ⇥ Ex prisoner of the Badlands ⇥ Ex cultist (Mourningstar) ⇥ Ex member of the Young Rogues RECENT EVENTS done my time and served my sentence ⇥ 01/21/39 ⇥ Reunited with their mother ⇥ 01/21/39 ⇥ Fought off Paige's attackers ⇥ 01/13/39 ⇥ Punished Michael for breaking the rules ⇥ 01/08/39 ⇥ Punished Sheogorath for his treachery APPEARANCE dress me up and watch me die ⇥ Catalyst is 6'2" tall; they possess a lean and muscular body, one that has a variety of old scars adorning it. Being hand-picked by Catalyst for a super-secret-spying mission?! Gabriel was as giddy and as determined as could be, like a Boy Scout on his way to earning a new badge. Except he managed to keep most of his excitement contained, as he didn't want Cat changing their mind. This could be his chance to prove himself worthy, to prove himself a tough Badlander that could brave through harsh winds and cold snow. He had worn the thickest jacket he could find and had slipped on his mountain boots. He had even packed some food, water, a box of matches, and a switchblade of course. There was no telling whether they would get lost or not, but hopefully not. Gabriel was fully relying on Catalyst to lead the way, seeing as he had never been to "Flintlock Lodge". He had heard plenty about it, though, as they were free range for the Badlanders to pick off of. As far as he knew, however, this was simply just a mission to gauge the area as quickly and undetected as they possibly could. That plan would not last very long. Gabriel had kept close to Catalyst, in a way mimicking the actions of Michael. He was their bodyguard as far as he was concerned, and he had to keep on his toes and be on the lookout for any signs of danger. Naturally, when one saw some other person threatening them with a staff, it was usually a cause for alarm. This boy wasn't too much of a threat, true, but who knows what could be done with that stick? No, he needed to step in. He needed to man-up. He needed to defend. The teenager tensed up as well upon being questioned, his hand quickly fishing his switchblade from his pocket. He did not unsheathe it, only holding it in his grip as a form of warning. "W[sup]HO[/sup] areâ€â€" He stopped suddenly, wrinkling up his features as to cringe at his sudden voice crack. Dammit, now was not the time to do that. Not when he was being tough. "Ahem," Gabriel quickly cleared his throat before continuing on, brows flattening against blue hues. "Who are you?" His voice considerably lowered in pitch in attempt to brush off his little "mishap". Of course this was a local, anybody could guess that easily. However, Gabriel still felt the need to challenge the other in some way. Re: HYPNOTIC [open, Badlanders] - CATALYST - 01-28-2019
Even as the one on top, as the most powerful person in the Badlands, they had a rocky relationship with the group too. While they'd never been shot there, they had been taken prisoner and forced to do manual labor while wearing a collar and leash. Their treatment might not have been violent, but it had still been its own form of cruel. With that experience, did they lead with mercy? No, of course not. They made it so disobeying them, displeasing them, would be an unpleasant experience at best, painful in some form or another at worst. But they didn't rule simply out of fear; they gave their people a great deal of freedom within some limits, and always came to their aide when it was required. Which it was a lot. It was better to be protected by Cat than find yourself on their bad side, or outside of their protection.
A boy walked up to them, even younger than Gabe. He brandished his staff, seeming rather distrusting. Alright, alright, hardly anything they needed to worry about. Their eyes slid over to Gabriel, one eyebrow twitching upwards when his voice cracked. Well, it certainly played into the way they were hoping the Lodgers would view him. His response, however, did not. "Relax, Gabe. He's got every right to be suspicious, we're on his territory after all." Deferential, almost, to the fourteen-year-old scowling at them. They had no doubt that they could dispatch him easily enough if it came to it, but they were equally confident it wouldn't be necessary. "I'm Catalyst, that's Gabe. We're here to speak to your leader about the relationship between Flintlock and the Badlands." Re: HYPNOTIC [open, Badlanders] - CATALYST - 01-29-2019
Cat couldn't pretend like they were exceptionally well versed in the group's long history. They new bits and pieces, of course, knew the names of some of the previous leaders and more notorious members, and were familiar with a few of the deeds that had been done. But they supposed the memory of the aggressor may be much shorter than that of the victims.
Now two more people approached, both older than them and one slightly taller. Hayley was armed with a shotgun; they'd brought a pistol along just in case someone attacked them (not necessarily a Lodger; if Sheogorath's capture taught them anything, it was that there were ballsy people willing to take on a Badlander for any sort of payoff), though that was for last resort only. They detested guns, and would much rather use just about any other weapon. She'd had the baby since the Christmas party, they noted. "Catalyst." They repeated, in case the pair hadn't heard their previous introduction. "The Badlands' new leader." Their gaze shifted over to Jackson. He very much looked like the type of person they'd expect to see dwelling here, massive and wild. "Lucky man." They sounded sincere, though their detachment from Hayley and her life rendered it fabricated. They side eyed the man for a second, then added: "Lucky woman, too." They didn't linger on those comments though, moving on almost enthusiastically to the proposition of going to a shed. It wasn't their home base, but it was inside and that was good enough. "That sounds wonderful, I'm freezing my arse off here. Sorry, children, I'm freezing my derriere off. You people must be incredibly hardy to survive this weather." Nothing there needed to be feigned; their eagerness to get out of the cold was quite real. When interrupted by Catalyst, though, of course he immediately stood down. He supposed that they were right about the whole thing, that this fellow had the right to be territorial, but he still felt the need to defend Catalyst ( even if they could very well hold their own ground ). If anything happened to them, then he wasn't going to take the chance of getting in trouble. He wanted to be a strong, capable man who could protect his superior. So, he put the knife away into his pocket, blue eyes still glued onto the stranger as Catalyst revealed them to be Badlanders. He could only wonder how he would react to this; as far as he knew, the Badlands didn't exactly have a great reputation among the nearby groups. He was ready to step forward again as a form of warning to the Flintlocker when they began to challenge Catalyst. However, the teenager's attention was stolen by that of the appearance of a duo, a man and a woman, the latter of whom was familiar to him. She had seen her at one of the Badlands' parties, and he could recall her being with-child at the time. She had birthed it, obviously, but it was nowhere in sight ( rightfully so, as this freezing cold was no place for an infant ). Blue hues glanced towards her apparent "husband", moments before she offered to move the conversation to shelter. Gabriel looked to Catalyst for instructions ( and could not help but slightly wrinkle his nose at the way he "greeted" Hayley and Jackson ), and exhaled slowly when they agreed to go inside. He wondered what was exactly going to be discussed; he could only wait and see. Quietly, he proceeded towards the shed along with the others, keeping his mouth shut for the time being as not to push Catalyst's buttons. Hearing Brendan's remark about them, Gabriel could not help but mutter moodily in response, "We won't be." Right? I mean, how could Catalyst possibly stand to stay out here for more than they needed to? It was cold and dreary and windy and unpleasant. Gabriel missed the ocean. Besides, the people here were proving to be quite annoying so far. He filed into the cramped space and stood to the sides so that the two leaders could take the chairs and negotiate whatever they were going to negotiate. Gabriel was simply an observer in this situation, and would presumably not give any input at all. He shoved his hands into his pockets, though his eyes flickered up towards the figure of Jackson as he served drinks for everyone... including him. Gabriel eyed the glass of liquor like it was some questionable object. "A sip will put some hair on your jaw, a whole glass is gonna make you a man in no time." Was that so? Gabriel supposed that most of the adults had a tendency to drink, even on occasion. Even his father had drank, and he was a man's man. Was this the marking of true manhood? Gabe certainly didn't want to reject this offer now, not after the Flintlocker had told him... that. For the sake of building his reputation, he would tentatively take the glass and briefly study its contents. It looked like liquidated caramel, though he was certain that it would not taste as sweet. Deciding not to sip it and instead go for a full swig, Gabriel tilted the glass back and took a drink, only to be met by a strong wave of foreign flavor. It absorbed onto his tastebuds and made him wince at its strength and punch, though he managed to swallow. How did people even manage to get hooked on this stuff? Was it really that great? Then again, he supposed that people tended to drink it not for the taste but for the... effects, rather. Re: HYPNOTIC [open, Badlanders] - CATALYST - 01-30-2019
Cat regards Brendan impassively, careful not to do anything that might cause the boy even more anxiety or a reason to suspect something was off. "Trust me, I can't wait to go home." Their hands ran up and down their arms, not a gesture meant to play up how cold they were, but rather a genuine attempt to warm up just a little.
Hayley's sarcastic remark made them arch a brow, but they said nothing, following her to the shed. It wasn't really what they were hoping to see, but they were so cold they'd take whatever they could get. Besides, they weren't going to push for the Lodge unless they could come up with a reasonably, valid reason for wanting to go there. "You carry whiskey around everywhere you go?" They asked, being somewhat reminded of the Badlands' own resident alcoholic. They shook their head. "I'm not really much of a drinker." They preferred having their senses sharp, though watching people get plastered was always amusing. Ah, right. The diplomatic part of all of this. Thanks to their time in Mourningstar they knew how to manipulate and deceive well enough, though in situations like this to do so convincingly requires a great deal of effort. "It's been quite some time since our people have had reason to actively go against each other. I can see yours still harbor bitterness towards us, which is understandable considering what previous members have done. Those people may be gone, but I won't put you in a position of unpopularity by suggesting we form some sort of alliance." They glanced at Brendan as they said this, assuming he wasn't any sort of minority in his opinion of the Badlands, even if Hayley and Jackson were hospitable enough. "Besides, I don't think my people would find such a thing all that good either. I guess you could say they're nationalistic." Was that a fair assessment of the Badlands? Perhaps not, but it was a fair assessment of the attitude they were encouraging. "Even if an alliance is unreasonable, I still see no reason for aggression on either side." Especially if aggression meant they'd have to brave the cold again. Yuck. "I don't wanna stay long." They said, brows furrowing just a bit at Brendan. They shook their head as Gabriel practically choked on the whiskey. "I'm teaching you how to properly drink when we get home." PERSONALITY if it feels good, tastes good, it must be mine ⇥ Catalyst is ambitious, with the cunning and ruthlessness to reach their goals by any means necessary. They can be brutal when they feel it is needed, however when it's not they won't bother. They tend to be rather aloof and apathetic to most things and people, with some very rare exceptions. Provided those around them don't cross a few specific lines, they're content to leave them be, though they've been known to take an interest in some people, which seldom has a positive end for whoever their interest is in. They can be manipulative, and will often encourage people to make bad decisions. Those that stick by them will be rewarded, but those that do not will be cast out, as they've been outcast for their entire life and have learned to appreciate loyalty wherever they can find it. Even during the most stressful of situations, they usually keep a firm grip on their temper and keep their calm, though when they do snap and lose their temper, it is uncontrollable. They're remarkably observant, often able to deign much from subtle clues in what people say, how they say it and how they act. i don't want anyone interrupting our conversation.❞ she instructed him, and his eyes met hers, and the communication was silent but immediate. it was hardly two long strides for the man to reach the wooden door, sliding the latch down and turning back to face the group, still standing in front of it, arms crossed in front of broad shoulders, watching the scene with cool features. the look in hayley's eyes as they returned to cat was steady. calm, cool, composed. it was clear as day on her features what she was thinking; they'd come onto her territory, followed her, outnumbered, into a shed, and she held the cards. did she genuinely intend to harm them, or hold them hostage? not in that moment. it was a display of power, not an execution. all she wanted was answers. ❝what i don't understand, catalyst, is why you're here.❞ she finally said, leaning forward in a confrontation, black eyes peering into them with a dangerous depth, one none of the lodgers had seen thus far, one she didn't bring out all too often. but this was her home, her people, her child on the line, and there were no lines she wouldn't cross for the three. her loyalty was to the mass of the group, not the power she held within it. ❝we've held a neutrality for some time now. i visited the badlands, heavily pregnant with my daughter, under the guise of a neutrality. the fact that you're coming here makes me think- no, tells me that something else it amiss. i call bullshit on a standard diplomacy visit.❞ she'd just done something dangerous, and a part of her knew that. politics was a game of fake smiles and lies, and though she'd become a part of the game, she didn't intend to partake in the bullshit. "I prefer a clear head." Cat responded easily. "Especially when members of present company are so... inhospitable." They tilted their head in Brendan's direction. Hayley and Jackson might have been polite so far, but they weren't stupid enough to think that it was unlimited or likely to last for very long.
Their eyes narrowed a fraction when Hayley responded, one twitching slightly in annoyance. It was true that their people didn't always listen to their word, though after people began seeing the consequences for disobeying them, the number of rulebreaks had gone down. "Gabe, what do you think I'd do if one of our people came here to cause trouble after I told them not to?" They asked, their eyes not leaving Hayley for a second. Their punishments varied from case to case, but they liked to think they made it proportional to the crime. Their gaze didn't move, expression didn't flicker, as Jackson went and locked the door. Showing any sign of weakness now would not play out well, not for them anyway. They imagined if Gabe seemed cowed by it, it would be a different story. "We've had a truce for some time, yes; I don't know about you, but that truce was arranged before my time in the Badlands. I know nothing of it or what the terms were. If you'd like to lay it out for me and we can renew it, we can discuss that. Assuming we wouldn't want to operate under an old agreement neither of us had any part in, I wanted to discuss new terms, seeing as we're both new leaders." They shifted, eyes still locked on Hayley. "Now if you doubt that, if you think this is a distraction while the rest of my people invade yours, by all means, detain us while you search the mountainside. We'll cooperate, though I'd request you move us to somewhere with a fire." They weren't going to find anything, nothing that Cat was aware of, anyway. Their motives might not be what they claimed they were, but this wasn't the guise of some sort of raid or other attack. It was reconnaissance for something they had no desire for, but wanted to be ready for nonetheless.
