ares drabble 01 - marsy - 11-21-2018
[align=center][div style="width: 470px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 1.2;"]he could feel eyes fall on him as he strolled into the bar, head held high, posture straight, hand in pocket. his blazer was left open, three buttons unbuttoned at the top of his shirt, tie untied and resting against his collarbones. he cast a glance to the "gang of misfits" gathered around the pool table, and the scene was almost amusing, taken right out of a cheesy action movie.
he directed his attention back to the bar, where the bartender looked up at him through his lashes as he poured a man's drink. he smiled, confidently, and not quite smug. he sat on a stool with more grace than anyone in the dimly-lit bar could ever dream of having. he waited patiently for the bartender, leaning forward with his arms on the counter, hands folded together, back arched as he rolled his shoulders.
"what can i get ya?" the bartender's voice was low, cautious, but shockingly kind. it made ares smile, softer.
"whiskey, on the rocks. thank you, darling."
he kept back an amused chuckle at the expressions of the bartender and man sat beside him at the name (he called everyone). he leaned back, sitting straight, hands still resting on the counter. he turned his head towards the man beside him.
the man looked more like a beast, albeit a handsome beast. he was bulky, arms and legs thick, veins popping out on his large hands and at the side of his neck. he was big, but his expression as he turned back to his coddled beer, half empty, intrigued ares. he wasn't often intrigued enough to start a conversation, but he felt a strong pull, and words danced out, voice smooth and nonthreatening.
"you look like you could use a hug," he joked with a small half-smile, and told himself to get himself another drink for the bitter chuckle and gruff "hell no" he received.
"i'm not a big fan of physical contact, either. thank you." he gave the bartender and soft, empty-eyed smile as he poured the whiskey into his glass, and motioned towards him with it at the bartender's nod of acknowledgement.
"i'm not a big fan of socializing, period."
that earned a hearty chuckled from ares, who took a sip of his drink and hummed after. he traced the rim of the glass with a long, nimble finger, and stared at it emptily. "i'm not either. usually," he started, taking another sip of his drink before turning his body towards the beast. "i had to make an exception for you, though. you look like the type i can talk to about how shitty the world is."
finally, the man looked at him, an eyebrow raised, and ares told himself and a third drink for the little smirk he managed from the beast.
"yea? why would a pretty boy like you have any quarrels with the world?"
ares grimaced at the pet name, turning back to face the counter and his drink in his hands. he quickly put the smug, confident smile back on his angular face, narrowing his eyes at the beast.
"i have plenty-"
he grunted as he was roughly elbowed, and grimaced as another hit the same spot. he glared at the men who walked by, sneering and cursing under their breaths. the beast matched his expression, though his might have been a little more violent; his eyes filled with fire, and he masked a growl by taking a gulp of his beer. he looked over to ares, who turned back to his drink, expressionless.
"i woulda beat their asses, if i were you."
he smiles, bitter at first, then almost serene, like he was the wisest person in the world.
"they'll get what's coming to them. fate can be just as much a nasty bitch as she can be a beautiful gift."
"you believe in that shit?"
"i do." i am fate.
