— okay so her parents were immigrants from mexico but mari herself was born in dallas, texas
— her life wasn't that different from normal the first few years, i suppose
— the only massive change was her younger brother, isaac, being born when she was around five
— she doesn't have any other siblings but it's okay because despite their age difference, mari's super close to her brother
— their relationship mostly consists of roasting each other and pulling shit but it's all outta love y'know
— but anyway, her parents?? they weren't exactly that bad, just supER religious
— like, her parents wouldn't let her read/watch harry potter and would freak at even hearing the phrase "abra kadabra" because of witchcraft. that's the kind of strict they were
— so because mari's parents wouldn't let her read/watch a lot of shit, she'd usually just hide things around or secretly find ways to watch what she wanted
— like she had an old gameboy and ds she borrowed from a friend and just kind of hid it around her room
— you bet she played the old fire emblem games and felt weirdly drawn to all the female characters without realizing that she was hella gay
— she'd let her brother play the games too as long as he didn't snitch so it worked out well until her mom found out and got suPER mad
— but eventually mari's mom decided to let it go and allow them to watch/play what they wanted because her mom didn't want to take away their happiness
— but her parents still started forcing both of them to go to church ridiculously often after that to compensate, which was kinda blegh
— the more she went, the more mari started to question everything she was being taught
— she probably considered herself atheistic at age 13 or 14 which didn't really go well with her parents. at first mari went along with it to make them happy, but after a certain point she got tired of wasting so much time on church
— they came to terms with it after maybe a year or so?? they weren't 100% okay but it was more like a "well as long as you try to be a good person in the end" sort of case
— when her parents found out she was gay?? ooh boy they were way harder on her for that. they thought she was just trying to be stereotypical rebellious teen going against her parents so they just ignored it or brought it up just to argue for a while
— it came to a point where it turned more into a weird sort of concern?? like they tried convincing her that being a lesbian was bad and would land her in hell but mari obviously didn't believe in that stuff
— but like with her atheism, her parents are slowly starting to become okay with her sexuality. it's taking a lot of time, but in the end they'd rather just see their daughter happy
— and even though they're not 100% on board at all, mari still appreciates that they're at least trying. but yeah that's her life ig, nothing that eventful happened
